We are having a weddin in sept and let me tell you it really helps to know someone. I know someone who uses to make wedding cakes and bouqets and she does an excellent job. She is just chrging us for the material. W are also friends with a wedding dj who wants to do our wedding for free. The ceremony will take place at an old historic house and will be $25 an hour. I have also found a great place to rent chairs for 35 cents a piece. I am getting all the decortaions and dishes free and my dress was $99 before the alterations. If you are here in the us try Davids Bridal for a wedding dress that's where I got mine and I love it.

We spent a total of $18,000 on our wedding, including honeymoon, rings, open bar and sit-down dinner. We had a very elegant wedding and felt like we spent our money well. The reception was a little over half our cost.
Our wedding was October 7, 2006.

I married my ex in 4/96. We spent a total of $3000. and it was a big, formal-type wedding.
We networked with family and friends to get them to pitch in. We'd been living together for 2yrs and already had a child together, we didn't really need anything.
My mother had my dress made for me.
I only had a Maid of Honor, and she was pregnant so I told her to find a comfortable, black dress.
Fake flowers that I rented.
I made my own centerpieces for the tables, along with all my own decortations.
Rented a Posse Grange Hall, which was owned by a guy who also owned the local tavern, so we got the beer kegs as part of the rental.
My parents gave us two cases of champagne.
Three friends bought all the bottles of liquor for us.
A co-worker of his (now my ex) was a photographer.
One of his brother's was a minister, who was friend's with a DJ.
I bought paper table cloths so they could be thrown away.
We asked everyone to pick up and move their own chairs and put out tables.
The ex's sister worked with a cake-decorator, who made us a wedding cake.
It was a POTLUCK reception and went over FABULOUSLY! Hardly ANY food left over because everyone brought what they wanted and it was REAL food that people actually EAT--not just food that looks good.
And my mom's friend paid for our honeymoon.
I'm now engaged to be married again, this summer, and neither of us want a big wedding, but SMALL, private, no one there but witnesses and we're already trying to figure out how to cut costs.

We got married in September 2006 and spent $8000 on everything for the day. And the honeymoon was brief so not very expensive. We rented a cabin for 2 days for $280.

The national average just went up to around 27k for the entire wedding (honeymoon not included)...If you're in a large city, expect to pay around that or more. Otherwise you could probably get away with a little less, say around 10-15k.

I'm in BC Canada spent myself around 700 dollars, my mom paid for tuxes and catering, and my in-laws picked up the tab for the honeymoon rather then getting a bunch of useless gifts. So all in total family and myself around 5 thousand dollars and that was in 1999.
