I haven't seem an elevator operator since in the 70's and I never saw them being tipped. If your really living somewhere that you do have someone running the elevator for you, my guess would be $1.00 or less depending on how often you use the elevator.

I didnt even know they existed anymore.. but I suppose there might be a few historical blds that have the old manual operating system. But No I dont think you tip elevator operators (didnt back in the day that I know of anyway)
I'm not sure of the ettiquite.. but generally I think you only tip people that provide you a "personal service" and only when its satisfactory.. examples: you tip a bell hop because he carried your bags to the room.. you could have carried them yourself. You tip a waiter cuz they wait on you, and provide what you want service wise ..you could have went to Mc Donalds simply for food... you dont tip Mc'Donalds employees cuz well they really dont do anything for you except sell you food... a Concierge provides personal services to you they get tipped..
An elevaror operator dosent provide a personal service, he provides a service to the function of the building to get you where you need to go, and if it was a modurne elevator you dont need him to push a button to your floor.. You dont Tip the plumber that fixes the sink in your hotel room either thats a HOST function its not a personal service. It kindda goes like that IMO anyway

Not sure why you would tip the Elevator Operator. Maybe if this is your building that you may live in. During the Christmas holidays it is nice to give a tip to them. They, after all, were there for you all year. Otherwise....I would say...no, this is their job and they get paid for it.
Good Luck!! :)

in dollar amounts, 10% of the time it takes for the lift to get from your floor or to the floor you want to be on. Say it takes 2 minutes to get from the ground floor to your floor. 10% of 180 seconds would be 18 therefore $.18 shoud be a good tip for a guy that doesn't do much work.
