Unless you actually have a cover note from your insurers then this is Fraud and Gaining Goods By Deception.
Not a good idea.
As well as being fairly easy to spot by the Garage as the garage contact the insurance team as a standard procedure when taxing a vehicle for a customer. This is to be sure you are insured rather than just a timewaster.
Take my advice, get the cover note!

Most insurers will fax across a copy of your cover note to the dealership for them to tax it for you.
Also most big dealerships tax the cars under their own insurance policy and just ask to see your cover note at the time of collection which again can be faxed across to them.
Just ask your insurer... It can't hurt!!!

I don't think you can, the DVLA or Post Office only accepts original documents when taxing your car so you'll have to take your certificate of insurance to the garage - a bit of a hag isn't it?

When I bought my car, my insurers faxed the cover note direct to the dealer.

it will have to be the original document or a fax of it, printing it off would be easy to fake any details on it using photoshop before printing.
