Medical Diagnosis -> Symptoms: Acid Reflux and Bloody stool. What could it be?
A good friend of mine called me up the other day and she told me that about 2 years ago she was diagnosed with Acid Reflux disease, she said she went for an Upper GI and all and it confirmed it, she was put on Prevacid and when that didn;t work she began using Nexium, that put a stop to it after taking only 1/2 of the first perscibed bottle. Now she tells me she has found bood in her stool (fecies) and she is worried something may be wrong. I said "Julie you should see a doctor" but she said she was too embarrassed. What could she have? I looked around online with her and we didn't find anything, but the symptoms sound to me like a stomach ulcer or IBS or some other problem with her stomach or intestines. Does anyone know what she could have? Do you think it's serious? What do you know about it?

I am not a Dr. but do know this should be checked out.
Dark blood in stool is indicitve that it is coming from Upper GI tract and red blood that we are familiar with indicates the lower gi tract (such as hemoroids or tear etc. It could be a bleeding ulcer. It is possible it could be serious. She needs to realize that everyone working in the office has worked around these diagnoses fro a long time and it really doesnt matter to them.. Don't be embarrassed here. The doctor is trained in this... don't be embarrassd in front of him... and you can go see a Gastrointerologis with just nausea as she had in the past. No one in the waiting room will know why she is there... Tell her to get into a doctor for him to decide. He is the expert.
If it is a small problem it will be over with... if it is a big problem... it will be taken care of... if it is a big problem that she doed not take care of early enough it could be a disaster. What is more important... to be taken care of early and be well... or to wait until it is to late to be taken care of at all?

Go straight to her private Dr. very soon, they will squeeze her in tomorrow as it is important not to wait. - or if her insurance allows, tell her to go to a gastrointerologist reccommended by the hospital referral service.... no need for delay. It is probably much scarier than serious... the testings are not so difficult...just annoying ... and beleive me the doctor does this 5-6 times a day... a piece of cake for him. More than likely it is something minor, but please no more delays.

Bloody stools are serious. Could be E-Coli (first thing that comes to mind)..

Could be that her veins around her sphinxter are bursting and then as the stool passes it's covering the stuff with blood

Could be a burst polyp..

Could be serious.... STOP THE BUS! CALL THE DOC OR GO TO THE ER sooner rather than later..

Can you imagine all the people that die every year from being too embarrased to go the doctor?

First, your friend should see a doctor. When she makes the appointment, she should mention what she wants to see the doctor for and ask if she should bring a stool sample (yuck).

Second, though, if the blood is red and new looking, it's probably from something relatively minor, like hemorrhoids. If the stool is black and tar-like, then it's time to really worry about it. That could be older blood from higher up in the digestive system.

Acid reflux disease can lead to ulcers. It sounds as if it has done so in her case - TAKE HER TO THE DOCTOR. Bloody stool is bad news.

This is a natural program that you can try to cure your acid reflux http://acidreflux.toptips.org

Acid reflux disease, also known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs due to the coexistence of several medical and lifestyle conditions. Physiological factors that trigger GERD include lower esophageal sphincter (LES) hypotonia (the gradual weakening of the LES), along with retrograde flow of stomach contents into the esophagus, and the level of sensitivity of the esophageal mucus to the reflux content.
