Toyotas look nice, they get way better gas mileage, they're designed better, and they weren't designed with the idea that "the sooner peoples' cars break down, the sooner they'll buy another car from us" (unlike GM).

Oh, and the only reason why you can find old GM's left and right, but not Toyotas is because of stubborn people that only buy American cars dump all their money into them, because it is cheaper that way than to buy a new one. However, that is not the case with Toyota.
And also, why do people say that imports cost more to repair than domestics, when (for my honda) i can find almost anything from under the hood for half the price of any domestic car's same part? If it costs more to repair than a domestic, than you're going to the wrong shop.

First and foremost, they are. Pop the hood on any new Toyota and most of the electronics and controls are GM/Delphi/Delco. GM has more cars that get over 30mpg than Toyota and Ford put together. GM has V8 engines now getting better milage than Toyota 4cylinders. GM is the number 1 manufacturer in the world and had been for 90+ years. Toyotas are a pretty good reliable vehicle (mostly built on GM technology) but the cost of repairs is double a GM vehicle and they are simply not as well made, hands down. They rot off the frame before most GM's are getting started. I can drive down the road and see 20 GM vehicles from the 70 or older in 10 minutes. You can drive for a month and not see a Toyota from that time frame.
-I work on all makes of vehicles 52 weeks out of the year for more years than anyone wants to hear about and import car parts are significantly highter than domestic, usually twice as high. Of all the domestics, GM parts are the cheapest and AC Delco aftermarket parts are hands down the best in the world-bar none! An alternator for a 98 Honda civic will not work on an Accord, will not work on a Passport or any other model honda. It wont even fit a 2000 Civic. They are not interchangable, An alternator for a 98 Chevy Silverado will essentially fitevery GM v8 engine from 98 to present in every car, truck and suv. Thats one reason for the dramatic difference in price

To add to the above post - Toyota quality has slipped in recent years. they have recently had the largest recall in automotive history, and now we are finding out that they've had recalls over the years that were not reported as recalls. What's up with that?
GM quality has improved greatly, and still can improve some more. but they offer a better warranty than toyota, have more power and generally get better fuel mileage.
People always seem to bring up the Prius, but that is a gimmick. History will prove me on that one. Look at the recent show cars and see where the real future of 'green' technology is.
Update: LOL, thanks for the 'Thumbs down' for an honest answer. Speaking of Toyota and recalls, here is today's headline...
"Toyota Motor Corp. plans to recall about 533,000 Sequoia SUVs and Tundra pickup trucks in the United States to repair faulty components that could make the vehicles difficult to steer."
Good thing Toyota is perfect, right?

Toyotas are good cars. I own one with 220,000 miles on it and I finally parked it, because I was just sick of driving it. But, The myth of "higher resell value", must also be weighed against the higher cost of initial purchase. GM and Ford will bargain on prices when it comes to vehicles. It's been my experience that Toyota will bargain very little when it comes to their vehicles and regardless of which dealer you go to, their bottom line is ALWAYS higher than a comparable model from another manufacturer.
So while they may hold higher resell value, you can't really count that as any sort of bonus for you(the buyer), because you will pay more for a Toyota to begin with.
And, on a personal note, while I do like Toyota, I still think GM has nicer trucks and SUV's.

GM #1, people are going to find out very shortly that Toyota is only focused on overtaking GM as #1, they want to build more cars than GM and their quality is suffering because of this, look at all the recalls they have had last year plus they build most of the cars that are sold here in U.S in the states now with american workers who don't work anywhere near the way the japaneese workers do. GOOD LUCK TOYOTA!

"the sooner peoples' cars break down, the sooner they'll buy another car from us"
It's peoples choice to buy what they want and there's nothing wrong with a healthy debate but when you make a ridiculous statement like that I just can't take you seriously. In fact, GM is now offering a 100,000 mile warranty on the drivetrain. If they don't produce quality, this will kill them in warranty costs so where do you get your info from ?

i think you need to do some research before you go running your mouth about toyota. toyotas better design is gms design, they've been working together for years now, gm helping them get their quality and build cost down, and toyota is helping gm with hybrids. whens the last time you looked at a vibe next to a matrix. its the same car gm built the car, toyota engine, aisin trans, and gm electronics. so read up on this stuff before you get all flustered about it.

they probabally like GM because of the fact that their cars have more power and they're domestic
i think its also believed that domestic cars have better frames, so when you crash, its harder to get hurt
