I already paid $70 for the delivery charge. Do I have to tip him as well?

it is thier own people delivering since they added the $70 to the total amount of the couch, thus including it in the taxes. (they said they did this because they use thier own trucks and not a service.)

I worked in furnature sales and went on delivery trips to learn about what they did. The delivery men do not get the delivery fees--the business does. The store takes the majority of the fees for their trucks, maintenance, fuel, insurances and profit. Our delivery guys received a percentage. Sometimes that could be quite low, soemtimes it could be good. It depended on what was purchased. I think our guys made 10% of the sales (before taxes and delivery fee). They didn't get a minimum wage so their pay for slow days was very low. It evened out okay. But new hires got stuck with the poorer routes (neighborhoods) so where one delivery man might make $70 for a $700 couch, the new guy would only make $40 for a $400 couch, or perhaps only $20 for a $200 chair. If there are two delivery men, that percentage is split so each only makes 5% of the sale. Their pay doesn't take into account whether they have to deliver on a one-story house close to the road or a three-story older building with narrow stairways.

Yes, I tip delivery men for good service. Many will go out of their way to move things for you. I suppose you don't have to, but if you shop there often, they will remember you and leave your delivery for last next time. They won't go the extra mile to make you happy--they have other deliveries to make. A tipping customer is someone they will remember and they'll actually try to get you on their route.
Besides, many pizza places also have delivery fees (and they pay minimum wage) but folks still tip.

I just recently had the same situation but with a different piece of furniture- that was also large in size.

I think even when we pay delivery charges, the dude who brings it up or into the house, expects something anyway.

From what I understand, it is correct ettiquette to tip the guy.
I'd say $5. so he can get himself a quick lunch/snack is good.

If the man you paid the $70 to is the man delivering the couch, no. If he is paid hourly, then yes. You could tip him $10, maybe more if there are stairs involved, and only if you are financially able to. If not, then by all means, offer him a drink or a sandwich.

Here's the object. The deficient shelob who has to lug your sofa and ottoman don't have anything to do with the enterprise, not anything to do together with your issues, don't have anything to do with any of that. He's only a tough operating man who makes $12 an hour who bought an order to supply a sofa. That's it. It's slightly like getting crushed up by way of your boss at paintings all day, then coming dwelling and kicking your puppy. It's misdirected anger.

I wouldn't tip.. that's what the delivery charge is for. The delivery person gets paid to deliver it.

Usually, it's good form to tip delivery men, because they are the ones that had to carry the big thing into your house! If you can't afford a tip, make sure you offer them a cold drink or a snack.

No. They are charging you for it (70). No tip necessary. He is not some random guy off the street. He is from the same place you got the couch. Trust me, he is covered.

No you do not. It is not required at all. If you do, it is a personal decision and a kind thing to do. There may be more then one delivery guy... it however is not required as this is what they are paid to do. If you can afford the extra, do it- if not don't.

Unless it's the owner of the store or the delivery service, yes.
