you don't have to teach them too much, because they pick it up them selves.my severe macaw is amazing .Since he has been a baby I included him in the decision for his food and toys and activities. He can pretty much tell me what he wants to do , what toys he wants and what he wants to eat!
he is extremely quiet, doesn't squawk much at all, and lives free on a tree in the house with his two Main Coon buddies.
if you are willing to invest the time it is going to be your best friend you'll ever have!

Talking is something you teach when you talk to him in any case. I repeat things I say to my BF Amazon and he picked up alot of words like that. Never talk nasty in front of your bird, (all so when not with the bird:) ) They repeat words and usually in the voice of the person that talked to them. My bird says good night every night when I shut his light. and oops when I drop something. He imitates the water running that I put in to his bottle. And many things. Like he sings songs from a CD that I leave on when I go to work.
So If you want to spend time training him I'd try with things that are not to hard for you to train your bird so you don't get frustrated. and work your way up. I have this book it's a very good way to start.

Teach your birds tricks like playing dead in your hand . My bird likes to hand from my fingers . Just remember it takes time to teach a bird a new trick or a new word. Not many people like birds that a bad vocabulary.

how about something that will scare all of your visitors, like "OH MY GOD, GET THAT KNIFE AWAY FROM ME!!!" or "get out while your still alive". it will be a hit on halloween. of course, you could stick to the classic "Polly want a cracker". just be prepared to say the phrase over and over until your sick of it!!
