NO NO NO NO. Do NOT stop cold turkey. I don't know if some of the people who answered & said it was okay EVER had a personal experience with it, or even know it's pharmaceutical properties. I once took xanax, low dosage, for a period of time, & was beginning to feel a little "psychotic." Maybe that's too strong--just not ME. I didn't take my "current" dose, & called my doctor to tell him I felt like I was getting "goofy" & was going to stop. He told me to put down the phone, GO & TAKE IT. (Which I did.) THEN he told me if I stopped "cold turkey" I could have seizures. (Wish he'd told me that when he put me on it.) I had to slowly withdraw. THIS IS IMPORTANT. I later went on valium that worked beautifully, never addicted, or anything. At the same time, I know someone who says she can't take valium! but xanax works for her. (Is that why her behaviour is so strange, I wonder?) Bottom line for anyone, is that you HAVE to withdraw. Please don't take any chances!

Edit: I've pulled this up again because I feel it is very important for you to know that while "withdrawal" can be difficult "symptoms," it can also be fatal. I know this from experience. My doctor knew, (although one should not always rely on the doctor who has little knowledge of pharmaceuticals) but at least talk with you pharmacist. It is best to stay on the side of "caution" & you may want to visit some health links for more information. I really care.

When I was 17, I actually had a Dr. prescribe be Xanax. I think they were 2.0s. You CAN quit cold turkey, but it can possibly be very challenging for you to stay off of the drug. You are probably going to go through a phase of withdrawl, and you will notice a series of negative side effects that may be hard to cope with. However, if you continue forward and stay determined, you can overcome drug addiction, but I recommend working something else into your daily routine like martial arts, yoga, chi kung, weight-lifting, boxing or something similar only to help redirect your life and to take your mind off of your addiction.

I went through very intense withdrawl when I tried to quit, and it was very challenging. Again, you CAN quit cold turkey, but it will be hard. Another possibility is to continue to lower your dosage and daily intake gradually while your also working with someone who can psychologically guide you in the correct direction and give you some support, but only if you think that you will need this support.

I have quit smoking cigarettes, black and milds, drinking alcohol, taking prescription drugs, as well as smoking weed. I've done this all in order to pursue the martial arts, and I can honestly say that I don't have a problem with any of these substances till this day. My former addictions are pretty much non-existent.

Depends on how long you have been taking it. Benzos, the type of drug Xanax is, can be dangerous if you stop taking it cold turkey. As a matter of fact, the only withdrawal that is fatal is that from alcohol or benzos. Do not guess this one, call the prescribing Dr or schedule an appt. Do not listen to amateurs on here.

No medication that is taken for depression or anxiety should be stopped cold turkey. All these meds affect different chemicals in your brain to do their job. Stopping cold turkey will throw everything out of wack. Talk to your dr. and tell him/her that you think you would be ok without it. Follow his/her directions on how to stop the meds.

Yeah that aint crap when it comes to xanax.
Thats the peach ones. Nothin going to happen if you quit taking them. Those are usually perscribed 3 times a day. I take the 2mg bars 3 times a day. So I understand what you are saying. It wont hurt your body though. You'll be fine.

The doc may suggest a relatively fast taper.

Yes. That is a very low dose. Try taking an aspirin instead and then stop taking that also.
