I was having such a bad day, I had just found out I didn't get a bassinet seat and I was going to have to hold our 22 pound son for our 11 hour flight home to LA and then I hear about an exit fee. I was about to come unglued or possibly cry because I was so frusterated and just wanted to go home.
Why....why do they have this fee? As if there aren't enough lines at the airport to stand in. I can't leave unless I've paid a fee to leave?
Deep cleansing breaths. International travel with 3 kids is no fun.

It's quite common to have to pay a fee like this, but I agree it can be frustrating when you have to keep queuing up at different places. When I was in NZ it was supposedly included in my round the world ticket, but I still had to pay something because the amount had changed or something!

All countries do that. Most charge you an entrance fee (basically a fee for a tempory Visa) then charge you to leave as well. That information is usually on the plane ticket. It is typical to pay a $5 entrace fee and a $25 to $40 exit fee or tax. Don't ask me why other than just another way of getting in our pockets.

every country charges a exit fee - although sometimes it is included in your ticket price so you arent aware of it - last time i travelled it was $25-00 to leave NZ.
