Just wanting to clear it all up...I love Dobermanns but feel that they are less of a Dobe when they have their tails [I don't want to hear lectures about the "cruelties of tail docking" & "cosmetically altering our dogs" so save it please].

All I am asking is if any Dobe breeders, within Australia, could enlighten me on the current situation with tail docking! Is it possibly to get a pup without a tail these days?

well, i guess in the late 80's the only thing that was illegal was cropping the ears, because my dad rescued a dobe and he couldn't have her ears done but her tail was. but if you were willing to spend the money, you could fly to the nearest country, and have it done. here in America, its all very legal, but you have to get a very good vet first. do some research. or if you dont have a dobe yet, but want one, there are hundreds of breeders in America if you would pay for it, send you a dobe, and i know quiet a few if you would like some help. i am very knowledgeable in dobermans, i have a friend who breeds, who would be happy to help you out! And belive me, i know what im talking about here becuase i have raised them all my life ;)

Isn't it illegal to have tails docked in Australia? There's nothing wrong with having a dobe with a tail. My cocker has his tail and it has nothing to do with personality. It also helps with balance, to show emotion. The only reason a tail should be docked if it is a nuisance, like knocking over things, or beating against walls and things causing the dobe to hurt himself.

As a doberman fancier myself, I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately, I'm in the US and can't give you an accurate answer.

See if you can find a Doberman Club (we have the DPCA / Doberman Pinscher Club of America) there. They'd be able to tell you whether docking has been "outlawed" completely or not. Check with a "reputable" breeder also. Attend a show and ask some of the owners or handlers.

According to Minerva, it sounds like they are banning breeders from docking or banding the pups tails, but it can be done by a licensed veterinarian.

In October 2003 the Primary Industries Ministerial Council agreed to implement a nationally coordinated ban on routine tail docking for non-therapeutic (cosmetic) reasons. In some states and in the ACT the ban is already in force and it will come into force nationally on 1 April 2004. After this date dogs’ tails will no longer be docked anywhere in Australia unless there is a medical reason behind the operation. Only a qualified veterinarian will be permitted to carry out the surgery, in accordance with state and territory legislation.

The last I heard , about a year ago, they were not allowed to dock tails, my breeder who has been breeding for over 35 years thought seriously about not breeding anymore because they did not want to breed dobes that had to have their tails, she had been doing it herself for many many years with no problems, the litter she took to the vet to get done all had problems with continuous bleeding etc... and it looked like they were done with a knife and fork.
Maybe ring a few breeders and see what they say.

Docking is perfectly normal for Dobies (As is cropping their ears), I've never seen one with a tail in fact!
