swallow your coughed up phlegm or just spit it out? I know this is sorta nasty, but I'm sick right now and am not sure if it matters or not. Thanks

Either is fine.
Phlegm that is swallowed enters the stomach where any microorganisms present would be destroyed by the stomach acid.
Spitting it out is good as long as you dispose of it in a tissue & wash your hands after to avoid spreading infectious germs.

i think it's better to spit it out cuz then the germs are leaving your body. but honestly, i can't bring myelf to do all that hacking and gagging so i just swallow it. :-)

It doesn't matter either way. If you swallow it...it is digested.
