It is different for every person I believe. For me personally I think it is the self satisfaction of knowing that you are still appealing to others. Some do it just because they get a rise out of it. Some people do it just because they are looking for the next best thing. Flirting is completely harmless unless acted upon. Most of the time people don't even realize they are flirting is just comes as second nature to some. Flirting can cause problems in a relationship but as long as both people know that it is harmless and can trust each other then sometimes it makes each other more appealing knowing that your significant other can attract others to.

I am in a very serious relationship, yet i love flirting and my partner knows that too.
Flirting just makes me feel a bit in control, well it allows me feel like i can keep a situation under control. I can flirt with who i want for fun and i can end it when i want.
But i do just flirt online, and i don't ever let it get too serious. If you call that person or meet them it's more than flirting.

Argh. Excellent question. No one's perfect, basically.
If you see someone attractive you just play for a bit that you're interested in each other, even if one or both of you is in a serious relationship. It reassures both parties that they're still attractive - gives a bit of an ego boost - and is just plain good fun, because it's not serious.
Plus, it makes the person who you're having a serious relationship with jealous... which is always nice, to feel wanted.

In some cases flirting is just a harmless way of finding out if other people still think we are attractive even though we have no intention of acting on it.

Everyone likes to feel sexy and wanted. Sometimes people get alittle bored in relationships and just like to flirt. It is harmless as long as that is all it is.

Because people like flirting. We are hard wired to do it. Been with my beloved for over thirty years and I still flirt with everyone: waiters, babies on buses, shop assistants of all genders, people who call me at home trying to sell me stuff - no-one is safe !
