most depts have collective bargaining agreements and policies that allow testing if a superior has reasonable suspicion that an officer may be drunk or high. In addition to that, many departments now have random drug and alcohol testing.
Lets not forget, police officers have the same rights as anyone else and can't be tetsed because you feel like it. What does christmas have to do with anything anyway? Lots of cops are jew, mormons, muslims etc. Cops are entitled, just like you, to drink off duty and just like you, are held to be responsible enough to not come in if they are not in a safe condition. They should test all cops right after they test every other employee at every other job in this country. 99.9% of cops are more responsible and professional than the average citizen any day.

Not as a general rule, unless alcohol or drugs are suspected. Ice queen and Stand@bt blah blah blah. You make me laugh, as i wonder who you call when your car/parents car whatever, gets scratched or you get burgled. Slag the Police off and then expect them to come running using the normal retort of "I pay my taxes" and always question why the Police aren't out there catching rapists and murderers. The Police do work hard and with every organistion, have a minority of idiots. Would you pick someones head off the road, or would you have the sensitivity to tell someone that their daughter has just been found dead?? Would you take getting spat at in the street, or work with no lunch?? You see what you want to see and nothing else. Are you up in the early hours trying to keep the general public safe?? Didn't think so. While you are tucked up in bed, there are people putting their lives at risk for people like you. Rant over.

Actually, we are held to a tougher standard. One, if I was suspected of being intoxicated, yes, I would be tested.
Two: If I am in an accident while on patrol, you can bet the first thing that will happen is I will blow, and submit a U/A.
How many people out there when they are in a fender bender, and the officer shows, are asked from the get go for both tests?
And, most of the officers I know either have there degrees, or are well on their way to having them completed.

there are bad apples in every barrel but my dad was a UK police officer for 30 plus years and would not drink if he was on duty within the next 20 hours or so...not even a can with his tea....that is a sign of a bent copper...one that drinks on duty...and for the record he has passed countless exams

While it would depend on the jurisdiction, the short answer is no, not before they go on duty. Although they would be subject to a test if their is cause (i.e. a smell or appearance of intoxication) and most places require breath or blood tests if something happens (car accident, shooting, etc.)
Oh and yes, they are required to take a written exam before they are hired.

As a police supervisor, I conduct "roll call" and inspect the officers to insure they're ready for duty. Should I observe something suspicious about their behavior, you can bet your bottom dollar I will have them tested for alcohol or illegal drug use.
Most departments also hold officers to a higher standard and should one become involved in an accident, at fault or otherwise, they are tested!
There are policies and directives in place which prohibit officers from the consumption of alcoholic beverages well in advance of their next tour of duty.

What make you think that cops are any less trustworthy then anybody else. Cops take their jobs very seriously. Your question is insulting and demeaning. I know this answer will be deleted but what the hell its Worth it, you are an a--h---, and I would have liked to stop you when I was on patrol because I am sure you would have given me a reason to kick the living **** out of you
