Dogs release a distinct scent from their anal glands. This scent is their main way of checking out new dogs. When your dog sniffs poop or another dog's butt, what he's really trying to do is make some determinations about that other dog.

They sniff butts because many, many years ago all of the dogs in the world were at a party. They all hung their butts by the door (like coats). Then the dog catcher raided the place. All of the dogs grabbed the nearest butt they could get and ran out the door. That mixed up all of the butts. Now they have to sniff each other to see if the other dog has his butt. ;-))))))))))

That's how dogs tell who you are. They smell the poop because they want to know who has been there. Dogs get much of their information using their nose.

Because they have an advanced sense of smell and can tell a lot about each other (and us) from sniffing.
