You sit with one leg on top of the other aligning your feet with your knees then you touch your middle fingers and thumbs together and place them on your knees. These are all energy points and it helps if they are all lined up. Then you take deep breaths completely fill up your lungs and then completely empty them. Concentrate on your breathing for a while. The trick to meditation is to try to clear your mind. Think about nothing. It is suppose to be a path to enlightenment. i have a hard time thinking about nothing so I imagine the energy going through my body and if I find a place that's clogged I concentrate on it until the energy flows through. In with the good out with the bad! Kind of like aang did on that episode. It's a great way to relax! And I love that show too. Good luck!

the idea of laying down and relaxing your body with closed eyes is a good one, but we in this day and age are far too deprived of rest and you may very well fall asleep if you try this...which is ok, because you probably could use the rest, but you won't be meditating.

try this;

sit in a quiet place and make sure you wont be disturbed by noises, the dog, etc.

get into a comfortable position. once there, do your best not to move.

set an alarm for about 5 minutes. hopefully the alarm sound isn't too crazy sounding...a soothing sound is best.

close your eyes and focus on your breath. feel your breath enter your lungs as you inhale....feel your breath exit your lungs as you exhale.

when your mind begins thinking of something, just let the thought go, and return your focus to feeling your breath.

a BIG part of meditating is maintaining a PASSIVE attitude. your mind WILL start thinking of things when you don't want it to. the progress will be made when you can maintain a passive attitude and continually let thoughts go and return to feeling the breath.

when you can "zone-out" and feel the breath without thinking for 1 second, have faith that you will one day hold your focus for 2 seconds....then 10 seconds...then a minute...then 2 minutes and so on.

it is not easy and you will be challenged the entire way. a passive attitude and continued perseverance will get you the results you wish.

then, all you need is to practice BA GUA ZHANG to be exactly like ang.

the avatar is a grrreat show!

ps - meditating is the act of focusing on ONE THING and that ONE THING only. even focusing on nothing is still focusing on ONE thing. it is easier to start out focusing on the breath...then when you get VERY good at that (30 minutes with no break in focus)...you should try focusing on nothing. to try that from get-go is probably too hard for someone starting out.

I just go outside and sit somewhere near a tree. I look at the tree and just zone in on one leaf. I stare and concentrate on the leaf so hard. I am concentrating on every aspect of it. I see every line and detail to the shadows on the serrated edge of it. Then after a few minutes, sometimes longer, meditation comes. I just lose myself in the zone of meditation. I have came out of it an hour later before and didnt even realize how long I was sitting there.

There are different meditations that achieve different purposes. For martial arts i recommend awareness meditation - feeling, listening, sensing, trying to take it all in.

Why this? Because that is what you need in a fight. The more you can sense what is happening the easier it is to respond correctly to it.

You might also want to develop chi/power/energy through your meditation - this is also achieved through awareness. Try really focusing on one finger - feel everything that is happening in it, to it, imagine what is going on inside. Eventually you should feel the tingle kind of like pins and needles when your legs go to sleep. This is Chi. Focus on it and it will grow.

then i suggest you go to the television board.

meditation is a calming technique (supposedly) not a martial one.

Although people have grouped the two together, martial arts is not about meditation it is about fighting.

be relaxed, lay down, close your eyes, let your thoughts float by, but
dont fix on them, just let them fade. the goal is to totally clear your mind. may take some practice. look it up online
