I have only had one ultrasound to date and that was at twelve weeks. The hospital I go through only does two or three ultrasounds if you are having a normal pregnancy. They don't give the second one until you are 24 weeks (which I am next week). They try to make the second one a 4D one if the equipment is available. I am very excited and nervous because I really want to know what gender my baby is. My question is how do 4D ultrasounds work? Are they invasive and should I expect anything different? How many of you found out the genders of your babies through 4D ultra sounds. Because if its harder to find out through a 4D then I will have them do the regular one.
Thanks and any advice is appreciated.

Getting one is the same as having a regular ultrasound (had my 2nd one this morning). The way they did mine was they selected a frame with the regular ultrasound, and then hit some buttons on the machine, and the view switched over to the 4D. When they get that image, they can rotate it almost 180 degrees and still have a 3D image of the part of the baby that they're looking at. It's really neat.

When they check for the sex, if there's any question with the regular ultrasound, they can check with the 4D and there should be no doubt after that. Gender on 4D would show up in all its glory.

Good luck.

The procedure is the same as a regular ultrasound. We were able to tell the sex by both methods so it should not make a difference, he is a boy may be different for girls. The picture gives great detail of all features so it may give a better indication of any hard to detect physical birth defects. We thought it was great and are disappointed the technology wasn't around when we had our daughter. You will be pleased.
