From your camera. Pour over the highlights in yoru camera's manual, learn the basics such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO and how those apply specifically to your camera. Then just get out there and shoot! Thankfully, there's no real right or wrong way to take a photo (it'd make for a boring hobby if there were...), so just have fun with it!
All that said, it can be intimidating at first, so here are a few references:

The easiest way is to buy a book for the basics. Then just take pictures, experience is the key. I would suggest entering this web site which puts out a challenge each week on a photography theme and then compare your results to others. It's a great way to learn:

Hope this helps you out.

I'll third the recommendation for "Understanding Exposure" Also, Kodak has a great beginner's book, printed in the film days, but just as relevant to digital. You might find it at a used bookstore, library, or Amazon.com.
Also, www.nyip.com, www.photo.net, and the Kodak website have oodles of information.
Possibly the best investment you can make is to read and understand your camera manual. That, and practice!
