if you're taking photography class, then you need an SLR camera and digital SLRs dont usually come cheap...unless you go for a film SLR. if these cameras are too expensive for you, then look for a good digital cam with manual features so you will still learn to adjust the aperture, shutter speed, etc...try the olympus ultra zoom series...

I am by no means a camera expert, actually just the opposite but I am constantly amazed at how great of pictures my Kodak Z7590 takes. I do not think that model is still for sale but the newer Z or DX models are all about the same. They have bigger zoom than many 10x-12x, are a big seller, and decently priced. You could certainly get one at well under $500 but since you mention you would spend $500 maybe you are looking for something a little more. For $300-$400 you could get the Kodak camera with all accessories (dock, case, etc) If you want a good everyday use camera with a good zoom then I would go with the Kodak.

You should be able to find lots of cheap, good 35mm film SLRs. Go to www.keh.com to look at used equipment. You could start with a camera body and 50mm lens for under $200.
A digital SLR will cost more. B & H Photo has a Nikon D50, with the 18-55mm kit lens for just under $600. The D40 is $50 less, but is not as able a camera as the D50.
You might want to check with the instructor concerning camera requirements before you buy.
Good luck!

If you want to go digital and learn, you might want to look into a point and shoot camera with manual controls (aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual mode) as a cheaper way in. I started out with a Canon G2 as my first "serious" (digital) camera and learned on that. Once I got a hang of how aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc worked, and once I learned the limitations of the P&S camera, I then took the plunge into the dSLR world.
Check out www.dpreview.com--they have a lot of in depth reviews, comparisons, and specifications on a lot of cameras.

I'll leave others to speak on digital cameras on which I have my own ideas. When it comes to 35mm it's regarded as out of date and there's no monetary value in most second hand 35mm SLR bodies.
Find out whether they'll be using 35mm -- if so, buy a secondhand Pentax with its original lens. Cheap. Compact for a SLR and neater than most.
