In simple terms a column is the verticle (up & down) element like a post and the footing is the base of it in/on the ground. Think of it like your legs and feet. Your legs are the columns and your feet would be like the footings (see the connection?). Collectively they support your body which would be like the building being help up. Your feet (the footings) help distribute the load on them over a bigger area on the ground which helps prevent the columns from sinking - again kinda like the idea behind snow-shoes - by increasing the footing size over a bigger area a larger load can be supported with less sinking.

The footing is the foundation, or the part on the ground, it distributes the building load into the earth. The columns are vertical structures within the building that convey the building load to the footing.
