At the markets in Thailand you can negotiate heavily on the items for sale. In general whatever price they give you is 50% to 100% higher than what you can buy it for.

If you're in a market like Patpong that has a lot of common items, a good strategy is to ask one vendor for the best price on an item you want and then move to another vendor and use that as a starting point to negotiate down.

As a general guideline, in downtown markets watch copies should be between 400 baht (for basic small ladies models) to around 1200 baht (for mens new automatics). Shirts around 100 baht for tees to 150 baht for polo necks.

In general smile and always have fun with the process. Thailand isn't like China- in general you won't get hassled by the vendor, so feel free to joke around while getting to your sale price.

Have fun!

Ask open ended questions and listen. People love to talk, so if you keep them talking, it appeals to their ego. Also, the more they say, the more clues they'll give you on how to meet their needs and get your way. Always be calm, don't make things personal, and be as professional as you can.
