Great Danes are by far the most awesome creature I have ever had the chance to encounter. I actually have 3 of them, indeed they are the most gentle of any dog I have owned or been around. When someone comes to our door and are met by one of our babies, the persons first instinct is to back up slowly. So yes, they are a very intimidating dog and their bark will make you think they will eat you alive. They are highly intelligent animals....it has never taken me more than 2 weeks to completely housebreak each that I have owned. They are very loving, loyal, gentle with everyone and everything and seem to think they are about the size of a yorkshire terrier....they are so comical. But to answer your question, they do make excellent watchdogs, because they will definitely alert you of any activity out of the ordinary....and I am sure they would be very protective of their owner, if the chance ever occurred.

People who don't know better will steer clear.
People who know animals or had a GD will come right on in.
They are very sweet dogs.
Just because someone is a criminal doesn't mean they are not familiar with a certain type of dog.

Their size and their bark would deter anybody. But they are well known as the gentle giants, so they are not an aggressive breed. But then again, they have no need to be.

Why do you need a watch dog?
Get a chihuahua or a yorkie, they will scare away anyone with their bark.

I have one. Yes, he is intimidating but I think my Bassett would be more aggressive if someone got in.
