In todays society, do we really need religion. That is to say, do we still feel guilty for missing church, or has it become mundane and outdated. Does church still have meaning, or is it viewed as having little to do with actual worship? Does not going to church make you less religious.
Basically one question.....is church still necessary?

Church will be necessary until Christ comes again. Then all religions will cease.

Depending on what you believe, a church is a place where people of similar beliefs can get together and learn more about their beliefs and how to live life by those principles. Even then, a church can be made up of people that believe things differently. Not one person is the same, all people think of things differently, whether it is a concept of heaven and hell, what kinds of actions are sins, what God, Buddha, Mohammed, Satan, and whoever else are like, etc. etc. etc. We are all different and have different viewpoints on just about everything. Churches are also for being social and they give you a place to help do things for others.

For some, church is necessary. I had stopped going to church when I realized most churchs are about money, not religion. Jesus said Build me not temples of gold and stone, split a piece of wood and I am there, lift a stone and you will find me."

For those secure in what they believe church is not necessary. For those who need to be reassured, it is very necessary. I tend to find those people who claim to be good Christians are only trying to prove it to themselves.

Yeah, church to me is a gathering of your community. It's a gathering of people you really love. I'm in Confirmation right now and I just got back from retreat and I have never felt so much love in a single room before. That feeling is priceless. There is nothing better than hugging the people you really care about and letting them know that you care for them. It's the love that makes me proud to say I am a Christian.

Nope. I'm firm in my belief that the truest Christians are the architects who design the churches. They put so much love and care into designing a majestic building that they feel houses their faith while others make excuses about why they can't go.

I think there are some people who "need" a church in order to perform good acts (such as charitable giving, volunteerism, etc.)

As an atheist, I am not anti-religion. I am against anti-zealots however...

Sure, why can't people who believe in the same religious ideology gather and practice what they believe? Anything wrong with that? Surfers hang out together, bikers hang out together, people into certain and special interests tend to group together. Why not Christians or Muslims or whoever?

Unless you're one of those who can't tolerate those whose ideas are different from yours and wish to ban and/or destroy them.

No, I think intelligent people can be decent without having the fear of hell hanging over their heads. They don't need to go to church to be told how to behave and feel good about themselves.
