Many cities and counties around the country have public housing programs which are subsidized by the federal government. However, it's common for them to have waiting lists.

There are limits on how much your family annual income can be in order to be eligible for help, but the levels are not too restrictive so don't let that fact scare you from checking it out, even if you don't think you have a really low income.

Look for a "Housing Authority" or "Community Development Authority" in your phone book under listings for both city and county government. These agencies are usually, but not always, tied to local governments.

These organizations may have assisted-rent housing that is owned and operated by the organization. They may also have programs to provide rent assistance for private housing. Generally, folks eligible to participate in the program pay approximately 30% of their monthly income for rent, and the government picks up the tab for the balance.

Rental unit size eligibility is probably based on a table related to the size of your family. For instance, a family can't get help with rent for a 4-bedroom apartment if they only have two people.

Your United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is the regulator of such programs around the country and provides federal funds for assistance. Their website is an excellent resource for finding out about programs and trying to locate something near you. Their website address is:

Just to give you an idea, here's a link to the website for the Madison, Wisconsin Community Development Authority. You can click on links for public housing and section 8 to get more info about the programs and an idea about income limits, etc.

Here you can't even LOOK at a place for under 1,000, which is a shame. I called about a ramshackle house that was a little _LITTLE- bigger than the one I'm in now and she said, Oh it's 1,100 a month. I said, good luck with that. I could see a newer home or even a 60's ranch home for that, but come on!
