It's because you so called believers are constantly picking verbal fights with non- believers.
Your words are by far more offensive, rude, judgmental, and out of touch with reality, thereby creating the need for the large number of thumbs down.
I have no problem with people talking about their religion as long as they don't get in my space with it.
Ignorant answers always get thumbs down, religious or not, so maybe you should be looking at the content of the answer for the reason why.

Now watch how many thumbs down I get!

What? Thumbs down on what, exactly? Where is your data for this spurious statement, given as fact?

How many real atheists do you actually know? I know two and they're actually really cool, positive, fun people. Why the religious are so up in arms about them I will never know, except that their way of thought scares the bejeezis out of you. I actually heard someone say, "Satanic atheists!" Which, any thinking person will tell you, is an oxymoron. Atheists cannot be satanic as they do not believe in that godlet either.

I would bet my house you've never personally met one.

Where is the data for this study?

From my experience, and I'm not even an atheist, but I get far more thumbs down whenever I answer a question honestly with things that christians like to pretend is untrue about their faith or they just don't like said out loud.

properly, i do not TsD someone for logical motives; I TsD them because i don't love their remark. Heck i'd even believe the substance, yet in the journey that they convey it in an boastful, arrogant, self-righteous way, i visit generally TsD them. it truly is no longer about good judgment; it truly is about expressing a disapproval of the answer. good judgment is irrelevant.

Because back in the day, it was believed that if you gave someone the thumbs down signal that you were telling them to go to hell.

the only way to prove that is to stand behind a atheist and watch him give many thumbs down

Only if they don't like the answer.I believe in Jesus and if I see a very hateful remark I'll give a thumbs down.

Wow, you've tracked the thumbs up and thumbs down activity of every christian and atheist on this site? How long did that take? Grow up buddy. People give them equally no matter what they are affiliated with.

Yes I'm sure... Who did the study, Newsweek? USA Today?

Anytime someone even mentions a belief other than Christianity on these boards they will get a thumbs down.

Are you kidding me? Why is it that whenever you post a response to a question after I've posted a response to a question I suddenly have a thumb's down?

Give me a break.

And here comes the thumb's down from you! (Go ahead - I dare you to prove me wrong.)
