Fill out the FAFSA for financial aid at your school even if you think you won't qualify. You might get some financial aid. There are also "institutional grants" that you can qualify for - which are given BY the school, but using the FAFSA as an application. There should also be a separate scholarship application available for the scholarships your school has.

Outside of that, try fastweb.com (I never had any luck with them though) and visit your financial aid office every few weeks to see their updated scholarship list (this will be scholarships NOT supplied by the school). You'll need to apply for each one individually, but I won a couple that way. Most of them aren't big... maybe $500-$1500 or so... but every little bit helps.

I make almost 30k/yr, although I am a single mom... I've been in college now since 2000 and I've never paid a dime... in fact I usually get a little for living expenses each semester. I graduate from a state university at the end of this semester with my Bachelors. Definitely try for financial aid and all the scholarships you can get. They're out there!

Awesome answer John Hightower! We are also in serch of scholarships for our daughter who graduated in June of 06 from High School and is currently taking a year off. We are really having lots of problems finding things since she is no longer in HS and is not considered an untraditional student either. Fastweb is very good though for you traditional students. Be prepared to write lots of essays. Read all instructions and follow all EXACTLY. Also, DO NOT make any errors at all. All these places get tons of applicants but only want to give their $$$ away to the best of the best. Go for smaller, private places that don't tend to get tons of applicants. Talk to everyone you can too. You never know when the right person will hear you!! Also search in places where what you're going to major in might help.Ex. A big local law firm if law is your interest, etc. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Have been doing research on this for the past year for my civic club. We sponsor a high school based youth club and their members are always in need of scholarship$$.

A have never had any luck with any of the scholarship search companies where you pay a fee. Maybe someone else has?

A lot of corporations want to be seen as "good neighbors" in the community. And they need a way to attract young workers. So some of them grant scholarships, usually from $1,500 to $10,000.

When visiting the websites of these companies, on the home page look for something like: ABOUT US or CORP INFO. Click on that, and then look for something like: COMMUNITY or COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.

From my research:, check out:
1. BestBuy (2 scholarships from each store for $1,500 and they enter you at their headquarters for a $10,000 scholarship).

2. Comcast (your high school principal must recommend you for a $1,000 scholarship. They also have paid internship at a limited number of locations nationwide.)

3. Cracker Barrel (www.cbrlgroup.com) for employees, or their children - $1,000

4. Kohls (each store awards $50 and a certifcate; then submits their winners to the region - regional winners receive $1,000 and are submitted to the corporate headquarters. Corporate level winners get a $5,000 scholarship and a $1,000 donation to their favorite charity.)

5. Wal-Mart (www.walmartfoundation.org) Each store awards $1,000 to 2 students at each school in their area. Or if you have been an employee for 12 months, you qualify to apply for a $2,500 scholarship.

6. McDonalds varies by region of the county. But a typical award is $1,000. May be from the corporation or from an association of stores in your area.

Good luck.
