I can think of lots of good commercial reasons (making us pay extra because they know we're worried about the environment and want to do something; compensating the loss as one low-energy bulb can replace ten regulard ones; price fixing) but is there anything inherent in the components that makes them so bloody expensive?

They are flourescent and thus require a ballast system (to control current flow) built in to the base of the lamp, unlike regular bulbs. Here, they tend to run about 4 times the cost of a soft white incandescent light bulb... cheaper when on sale.
But, make no mistake, they are 'hot' and.... laws of profit, supply and demand!!! :-)

1. there is more raw material in the actual bulb
2. not as quick to make
3. more expensive materials used
4. not as higher demand for them
5. machinery to make them is still relaltively new compared to machinery used for standard bulbs which has been used for an era
6. people will pay it as there is no cheaper alternative, think about it.... over the decades.. price wars on bulbs that were once expensive brings their over all value down all the time, in 10 years time, energy effiicient wil be like 10p a bulb

Ten times dearer? Where are you buying yours - Fort Knox? They're nowhere near ten times as expensive in Wilkinsons here in Kingston.

well they use a gas to burn instead of a filiment, and i think they are pressurised so that could be an expensive practice, also they last longer. a lot longer. though i don't think it is that much more expensive to produce them just for profit i guess.
