we have a golden retriever puppy, we often take him to the park and let him off leash. i tried to take him for a jog this morning but he is pulling me everywhere. how do i train a dog to heal? i realize this is a silly question but my last dog didnt even weigh 10 lbs so this was not an issue

You need to get a book or two on training. Once you have started you will want keep going with other lessons.

It would take up a lot of space to try to answer your question to a degree that you would understand. By getting a couple of books you will have choices as to how to go about it according to the author of the book. Try to find one that modifies behavior and not one that is method training. That way you will be working with a specific animal and his attitude, temperament, behavior, and willingness for training.

Good luck. It is simple when you know how. Just educate yourself cause you can't teach something you know nothing about.

if the pup is old enough you can enroll the pup in a training class. this would be your best option, as they will teach you many other things besides heel that will help make your dog a good puppy. you can practice by starting off walking. keep the leash short and don't allow the dog to go past you. everytime the dog starts to pull ahead of you just pull the dog back to your side or just behind you. as the pup learns not to pull you can speed up the walk and eventually get to a run.

I agree that a really good obedience class would be a great idea for the both of you. But in the meantime, start off with your dog in a sit stay very close to your left side, with his head about even with your knee. When you start walking, start off on the left foot simultaneously saying "heel". You need to keep him on a very short leash to start off with until he begins to get the idea. Every time he tries to forge ahead, give him a tug to get him back in place and repeat the command heel. It takes a lot of practice and you need to be very consistent and use a lot of praise.

What I've always done is also teach my dogs the command "stay close" which they've all learned means that they don't have to stay strictly in the heel position (because it is their walk after all!), but they're not allowed to try to lunge ahead and pull me around. Since I walk 3 large dogs at a time, I don't use the heel command, only "stay close". You might want to teach both to your dog, especially if you're jogging with me, the heel position might be a bit too confining.

It will be easier to teach him to heel than to heal. If he can heal, you've got yourself something.
