I have a 5 or 6 year old grey cockatiel. she's always been really shy and a bit skittish, and I think this may have somehow harmed her. I got home and she's lying in her food bowl, which is at the bottom of the cage, but she was standing. I put new water and food in her cage, and she's eaten and drank a little bit, but she still seems very weak. usually when I try picking her up, she runs away. now she lets me. she's been looking around with her head(just moving her head, pretty much), and seems a little confused. she HAS laid eggs this summer(first season she's done it), and she has a green-cheek conure as a cagemate. I think she may have fallen off her perch or something, but I can't be certain, and she's really good at balancing, anyway. she seems a bit weak, and has been using her beak to actually grab on to something and pull herself instead of just walking. I'll take her to the vet sometime this weekend with my dad, but I'll call a vet right now if I need to.

However, neither of my parents are home right now, and I can't drive (13 years old). is this urgent and if so, what are some sites that show emergency pet response teams in a certain area? thank you so much for even looking, as this may mean life and death for my pet

and my green-cheek conure now seems to be grooming her. I'm not sure if that helps at all, but it might

oh, and I know I'm being optimistic, but it seems like she's just sleeping. her eyes are closed(she's still breating, don't worry) and when my other bird chirps, she opens them and looks around a little bit. again, should I get help immediately, and if so, how?

I gave her a 'nest' bowl with paper towels inside an unused food tray, and now she seems to be doing alot better. she seems to know not to get up and move around too much, but she's still getting more active. I followed most of the tips so far, and they seem to have helped. My mom and dad will probably be taking her in anyway tomorrow, so we should be able to get her 'fixed' by then. thanks for all the help you guys have given, whether it worked or not. It's really meant alot, and you probably saved a life.

I looked up a few things online and it can be any number of things, but all require that the bird get taken to a vet ASAP. If you can't get to a vet today, you should at least call one and find out what they suggest doing. The websites I saw say to give the bird a lot of water and make sure it stays warm (you can put a heating pad under its cage and cover the cage partially). Here is a website that might help, but get her to the vet today if possible or tomorrow the very latest, good luck!!

Hi there. I sure hope things improve soon. Egg laying even infertile ones like the one yours laid take a lot of energy. All seed diets can lead to malnutrition. Try a good pellet food, add 10%seed, and 10% fruits and veggies. Hydration is the key so watery fruits like apples can help especially now. a few pieces of hard cooked egg with crumbled shell can help in her protein and calcium needs. !/2 plain Pedialyte and !/2 water would be great. If that is too expensive. Boil some brown rice for ten minutes and use the rice water for the electrolytes.
. Keep her environment warm and away from drafts. It would be good to have a birdy tent for her to rest if you can. Let us know how it goes and you are in my thoughts. Oh and most states consider leaving a child alone at 13 is just fine. I must admit you write better than most adults. Hang in there and I hope things go very well.

Hi. It sounds like your cockatiel is sickly. It could be that she just has some kind of flu. What you want to do right now is to just telephone an emergency vet (preferably one that specializes, or at least is familiar with) birds. Just look in your phone book and call the nearest emergency vet--they should at least know of a vet that handles birds a lot. Definitely get her looked at just because birds are very fragile compared to cats and dogs. Try to go today if your parents can take you, but call now just to see if they can diagnose something or tell you something to do for her over the phone. Also if she is near any drafts or odd chemical smells, move her immediately. Good luck!

Yep, you'll want to call the vet immediately, and call your parents and let them know you'll have to take her. Unfortunately, by the time cockatiels show signs of illness, it's usually pretty serious.

Call your mom and dad first and tell them it's an emergency. There is nothing that you can do by yourself. Your vet will have to run a series of tests to determine what is actually wrong with your baby.

Good luck! I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Who do you call in case of emergency when your parents are not home? Talk to them if you can't reach your parents because they should be able to help either get the bird to the Vet or help you find out what to do.
If you can call your parents directly that would be best. They may not like being called at work but if it is an emergency or you think it is an emergency I would hope they would be okay with that!
I admire you that you care about your birds like that.

If there is no one who can help you get her to a vet, the most important thing to do is remove any possible stress to her. Make sure she is in a warm place with no drafts, take the other bird out of the cage and cover it. She really should get medical attention as soon as possible, call your vet to see if there is anyone in your area they would recommend that might come out to your house.

This is strange. There could be something wrong with her legs. I don't really think it's extremely urgent, but I do suggest getting her to a vet a.s.a.p
Good Luck!

you need to call one of your parents right now and have them either come home and take the bird to the vet or contact the vet at the very least. birds can be very fragile and can become deathly ill very fast. good luck.

With any female bird as far as I know, there is a risk of egg binding. Do you supply calcium for her?
