Tell him to Shut up and Do the dishes! And do it right!
Or "I need you to keep the noise down and clean up this place"
Or "I'm trying to read in here and I would appreciate some quiet"
Or "I want to cook and this kitchen is a disaster -- get in here and help clean it up"
Or "I want you to be more respectful of my needs for quiet and cleanliness"
Or "I heard some strange noises coming from your room last night"
Or "I'm going to call the health department on you -- you're going to jail for dirty dishes"
Stand up for yourself and ask for what you want. Whatever your style -- bossy, funny, over the top -- just say it.

Try talking to him and addressing the issue peacefully before doing something radical and silly. If that doesn't work, look at your lease agreement. Who is paying rent on the apartment? You? Him? Both of you? If it's -only- you, you can kick him out. If he has a signature on the lease agreement somewhere, tough cookies, unless the noise he makes is enough to bother other neighbors, and the neighbors have filed written complaints to the superintendent.

If it was stipulated before you moved in together that each person needed to clean up after themselves, then Im gonna have to agree with Billy, a previous poster. Whatever mess he makes, pile it on his bed, dishes and all. Ask him, who does he think is gonna clean it up because his mother doesnt live there and your not his ol' lady.

Give him the choice of cleaning after himself or paying to have it done. You can't live that way. As far as what he is doing in his room he needs to keep it down. I think giving him the option of paying for a cleaner will do the trick.

Put locks on everything....if he wants a dish he will have to ask you for it. OR Fight fire with fire. Be nasty....leave clothes and dishes all over the place....don't clean up the bathroom, have people over until late in the night....etc etc etc.....do this for a bit and see what he says. If he doesn't seem to mind putting up with your antics then you will have to give him an ultimatum....either clean up his act, or move out.

You can't really change people unless they themselves are already committed to changing. I suggest you need to get a new roommate -- you obviously have different habits and standards for cleanliness. No amount of talking or discussion will really make it a workable relationship.

Every dirty thing he leaves lying around, pile up on his bed.
The message should be clear.
