I have cut my calorie intake about 1000-1200 per day. I am still consuming about 1200-1500.(I was eating ALOT and gaining ALOT) Will my body go into starvation mode for cutting down on my calorie intake so fast and I won't lose any weight?? I've been doing this for 14 days and I don't feel like I've lost anything yet.. Is this normal or did I cut out too many calories at once?? I want to lose 50lbs.

1000-1200 calories is alright, and its still healthy. Starvation mode is when your body receives about 600cals or so, it doesnt matter if the change to 600 calories is too fast, just the fact that its so low makes the body start eating itself to last every calorie (muscle and bones)

I, too, need to lose 50 lbs and have recently become obsessed with dieting. I say obsessed in a joking manner! :)

I actually did a lot of research on how low can we go... some studies have shown that going as low as 800 calories a day will not induce starvation mode, but only in those who were considered obese. Those that are of a normal, healthy weight will induce starvation mode going below 1000 daily.

the fastest way to lose weight is to trick your body every 2 weeks. I use the US food pyramid web site to gage what I should be eating and I base my diet on 1200-1300/day. but to throw my body off, I take one day off every 2 weeks, usually a Saturday. I eat pizza, ice cream, cookies, whatever! Then Sunday I have whatever I want for breakfast, eggs, hashbrown, bacon, toast and drink juice. Then I'm done. Sunday lunch and dinner are "back on" my diet and throughout the next 2 weeks until my Saturday off again. Our bodies become accustomed to our eating habits and adjust our metabolism accordingly. It also makes for easier dieting b/c you have something to look forward to as a reward, and you don't feel like you HAVE to give up your favorite bad foods. I've been doing this for 2 months now and have lost 20 pounds. So, eating 1500 or less is a very healthy way to diet especially if you are cutting your normal intake in 1/2. good for you!!

Pat,
Your caloric intake depends on your age, gender, current body weight, and regular day activity level.

Look up 'Basal Metabolic Rate' and try to find one that gives you a formula to calculate BMR. BMR is the number of calories you burn while laying down. Start with the BMR number as your daily caloric intake; if you don't see a change in your weight then reduce the number of calories by 2 cal times your lean muscle mass (lean muscle mass can be measured using a body impedence device such as those made by Omron or Tanita). So if your BMR was 1200 calories to start and assuming your lean muscle mass is 80 lbs, then you want to reduce to 1040 calories (2*80=160; 1200-160=1040)

It's seems complicated but it's really not.

Good luck and train hard

there is a much easier and cheaper option for you and it wont leave you feeling hunrgy ot tired. losing some pounds of any description is what you want then I used a great website and coach who helped me. They were very friendly and gave me lots of great advice. I needed to lose 40 pounds and I did so fairly easily. The website is www.myhealthabcmall.com once you fill in your details then you can see the full range of products they have. The products really work and you feel great whilst losing weight, its all nutrition based.
I lost all my weight in less than three months and they have helped me to keep it off. I would definitely recommend using them, the tips you get and encouragement are excellent (their advice and time is FREE). I am still with them so I stay healthy. If you just want to buy the products and not use the coaching then you can do that aswell, there is a link in there to email them so you can tell them you just want to buy and not speak to anyone. The owners will even advise you via email on what to purchase depending on what you want to lose, my sister did it this way (she was more self conscious than me) and lost 76 pounds in less than five months. These guys are just great, try them.

1200 is pretty much the minimum caloric intake you should go down to. Any lower and you will be slowing your metabolism. Stick with it! 1200-1500 sounds like a good range for weight loss. Are you exercising as well?

The only time I ever experienced it I was eating a lot yess than that. 1200-1500 shouldn't put your body in starvation mode. Just make sure you are excercising.

how many calories a day you need depends on how much lean body mass you have and your level of daily activity.

check out the website below. it will give you a accurate assessment of how many calories "you" need per day...
