Yes there main benefit is that they airate the soil. Poor soil conditions are quite common and likley the leading cause of tree decline in urban areas. Urban area soils are very compacted and the air space is therfore limited. Earthworms are about the only way to reverse soil compaction without doing more harm to trees.

Earth worms provide channels in the soil that provide oxygen to the parts of the plants, helping them grow and maintaining the plant. The worms also provide a little fertilizer when they die, so the more the merrier!
