Yes there main benefit is that they airate the soil. Poor soil conditions are quite common and likley the leading cause of tree decline in urban areas. Urban area soils are very compacted and the air space is therfore limited. Earthworms are about the only way to reverse soil compaction without doing more harm to trees.
