I slice it at both ends just about 1/4 of inch before dipping in batter. don't slice too far or will fall apart..Good luck

Although I have not tried this, I am an avid cook.

One trick for preventing food from curling under heat is to apply pressure from above, such as a slightly smaller frying pan. This is not always pratical, depending on what you are making.

Another trick is to support the original shape by skewer or miniature skewer (called a toothpick).

Yet another method for preventing food from warping involves the grain and natural curve of the food product. Do not put them curling side up, put them curling side down - gravity helps alot.

Place a bamboo rod through them..then they will stay straight
