drink tea and coffee beverages. Compounds called tannins found in tea and coffee tie up iron, reducing how much is absorbed.

Donate blood. Call the red cross, don't mention the iron overload because doctors charge for taking your blood and destroying it for profit. There are accident and surgical cases out there that need the iron rich blood. You can donate a pint once every eight weeks.

Jackie, this can be a serious problem. If your doctor didn't provide you with a diet plan, ask him or her to refer you to a good dietician. In some cases phlebotomy (drawing off blood) is recommended. It's unethical to donate blood without informing the blood center of medical conditions, and highly unethical for people to recommend this over the internet. Be skeptical of alternative medicine in this situation. If you aren't satisfied with your treatment, see a hematologist.

Whoever informed you of this condition should give you guidelines as to what to eat. First of all, avoid spinach, liver and anything that is advertised to be "iron-enriched".

donate blood. dont eat red meat, spinach or liver. drink or eat anything with vitamin C, meaning, orange juice, and citrus fruits because it interferes with the absorption of iron..( the doctor told me this when i went to donate blood. he told me to stay away from vitamin C because i was anemic)
