Instead of focusing on specific breeds, focus more on behavioral characteristics, personality, and time commitment that you're looking for.

1. Make up a list of requirements for the dog - behavior, temperament, space requirements, activity level, grooming time, training level, etc.

2. Make up a list of nice-to-haves - for me, this was gender and color among other things.

3. Make up a list of things you absolutely do not want.

4. Take all three of these lists to the local shelter and/or rescue and meet with an adoption coordinator to discuss what you want from a canine companion.

5. Let the adoption coordinator pick several dogs that match your "ideal dog" template.

6. Play with and socialize with them all, and let your heart choose the right one.

You need to look more in the time it will take to take care of both a puppy and a young child. Safest way would be to try to find a dog about 2 to3 who is already trained and family safe. Breed is something to think about alot of your larger dogs like Great Danes which I have 4 are gentle giants if raised right they can also be very dominant.Newfoundlands are also gentle but then you get into hair problems. Labs, retrievers, collies, and German Shepards tend to be good family dogs these guys get big too.Any dog that is trained right can be a family pet.Check local shelters for dogs already trained. If you are going to go with a puppy make sure you do your homework so you can make the introduction go as easy as possible and look in to basic training

Not all small dogs can nip, that is a very broad over-generalisation, so please don't believe that. All dogs can be gentle with children if they are well trained, large or small. However, some breeds have different personality traits, which you need to take into account. I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who is wonderful with children. This breed are known to be totally 'non-aggressive' with no hint of nervousness. They are classed as a 'toy' dog, in terms of size, but with high intelligence levels.I chose this breed specifically as I have a 1 year old niece and thought a large dog, may unintentionally, be too boisterous. I take Maisy (Cavalier) into primary schools to talk about animal welfare, we visit nursing homes, she is friends with everyone/dog/cat/rabbit/living creature we meet. She was a joy to train, they are a adaptable breed so can fit in quite happily with what ever lifestyle you lead. They love walks but do not need to go miles, so if you are busy with your toddler the dog would be just as content curled up by your side.
However, as I said before, if dogs, whatever breed, are well trained they are wonderful for children, but caution should always be taken, never leave any dog and young toddler alone. Good luck!

Golden Retrievers are my favorite dogs. I've had three already and I haven't found anything wrong with them yet.

To have the best golden I would make sure that they're AKC registered. The AKC registered ones don't have problems that the mutts.

There are two different types of goldens; a golden golden, and a copper penny. A copper penny is more of a showy dog and I prefer them over a regular golden.

They need lots of love and attention. They also make great hunting dogs and are very quiet and kind. They are great with kids.

For a calmer golden I would get an adult puppies take lots of patience.

Goldens are grest with very small children and are one of the most popular breeds.

Well, There are loads of dogs to choose from but going from my experience, BORDER TERRIERS are a great option. The don't shed hair, they are loyal and love to be with families. They don't need a massive amount of exercise, just a 30min walk a day will do. They are very FRIENDLY and are just generally great family dogs.
Hope this helps!

I think 18 months are two young for getting a dog. The child is to young, and will hurt the dog by accident. I wait until my child was six, some of my friends four.
If you do get a white lab, not a puppy

It's all in the breeding. My family are based in Fettercairn, Aberdeenshire and the breeder has bred us especially to have good natures. I am very gentle with all children and like to waddle into them like a penguin. I just love kids. The downside is that I get bullied a lot by aggressive dogs and I don't have the nouse to fight back. My Dad sticks up for me. If you live in Scotland check out the Dundee Courier on a Saturday under Dogs and find a guy advertising collie pups with a good nature. He's the man. I have a cousin in Tealing and we are as like as two peas in a pod but from different litters with the same parents. So, it's all in the breeding. Pick a dog that actually picks you. If you go to view a litter and one dog comes straight to you, that dog is for you, trust me, I know, look at my profile

You should go for a large dog, such as a labrodor or a retreiver, they have great temperments and are very patient with children. Small dogs are threatened by children and often can nip and bite in jealousy.

Labradors are great but may be a bit big considering your sons age & they need lots of exercise/ attention. It really depends on how much spare time you have to give to a dog
