According to a few articles I've read in a few news magazines the fear, for those writers anyway, is based on economics. China has been buying up a lot of American debt. According to those articles, if China wanted to bankrupt America, all they would have to do is ask us to pay up. They won't, of course, since a good portion of their economy is fueled by American lust for cheap goods made by even cheaper labor.
tiger- The big "C" scares my mom too. She always points out all the bad news she can find when I return home every summer. Yet, she gets cranky when I point out the bad news in America. Ignore the naysayers and enjoy your time when you come here. It's a great place to be.

i don't. I think China is an awesome place. everyone i have made friends with are great people. China to me is the coolest place on earth. The land, the culture, the history, the food. the business! I'm glad most americans don't understand China. Don't research China and don't go to China! haha! because I'm going and that is less competition for me! haha! There are however over 250,000 westerners' living in China right now. Millions come and go annually for business and travel.
Most of my freinds and family don't understand my interests in China and the fact that I'm going there. The majority of people still have the fear of the big (C) word. Communism... the american government was great at putting the fear of God into the american peoples minds.
My parents think the fbi is watching me because i talk to people in china on the internet or the telephone! haha...
I read the chinese contitution for its' people, and all the rights they have. it surprised me how similar the constitution is to ours in the usa.
ignorance and fear or the unknown. Listening to others' opinions and incorrect information, deception and lies. attitudes handed down from the last generation.
during WW2 the US & China were strong allies. you dont read that part of history in public schools. The Us & China have been great partners for a long time. It is a crying shame that more people don't know china very well. They should be teaching Chinese in schools not spainish or french...haha.
everything we buy comes from China, not many white boys can speak, read or write chinese.
Hope you like my answer. I have been studying China for 1 year now intensely. After all, I will be there in a few months to study and then teach english in Beijing.

The US and China have forged solid diplomatic and economic relationships over the past thirty years. American tourists are traveling to China in record numbers. I do not believe that Americans in general have a fear of China but have great respect for their accomplishments. If Americans in China seem apprehensive it is probably due to the fact that they know little about and understand even less about Chinese customs and are careful fearing a wrong move could end up in an arrest by local police.

I don't know if Americans fear China but here is what I can tell you. Here in China, it is rather the opposite. I discussed about a few things with a Chinese collegue and he told me that Chinese was afraid that the US would attack China because China is an economic threat.
I ask him why ? He answered that the US military tries to isolate China. They have military bases in Korea and Japan and help Taiwan. Bu doing so China would not be able to go out by sea.
I could make him understand that it would not be wise for the US to attack China but it was useless. He has this idea in his head and it won't go away.

I think the average American does not fears China. But many are concern. Their rapid economic growth is changing the world economy. People are always concern about change.
Scientists are also concern about world pollution caused by the rapid growth. It has been shown that the factories in China cause acid rain in North America. But factories in US also caused acid rain in North America, however not as much as years ago.
History has shown that as countries economic growth develops, development and money first takes priority over the environment. However, as people become more affluent, people realizes that quality of life is also important and demand better environmental controls. Many predict that China will enter this stage sooner then other industrial countries did. Some predict that China will soon use state of the art environmental controls so they can continue economic growth and have a good quality of life.
So, the bottom line answer to your questions is, China is changing very rapidly. Change causes uncertainty about the future. People are always concern about change and uncertain future.

I don't fear China - but look at it this way. It has to do with Communism. China, North Korea, etc. Of all our enemies, I think China (although they're by far the largest) are the most rational. Iran and North Korea SHOULD be our main concerns right now (after Iraq and Afghanistan, of course).

The Americans are afraid of everyone aren't they? That's why you have such a well established gun-culture. Most Americans don't even own a passport and many probably don't even know where China is. Americans think America is the centre of the Universe and everyone in the world must be like America or get bombed. Strange people. I'm afraid of Americans!

Dont listen to the Media so much... do you actually hear people saying this or are you just reading into what NBC or CNN sais? I dont fear China..they may be a huge and SOMEWHAT powerful country but I think they are a rational people and I dont fear what they will do. Iran however is a country to fear. It is run by a whackjob who could easily wipe out millions of people. Dont forget it only take ONE nut to ruin the world.

hte are the emerging power in all fields economic and military and the usa just cant stand it.how can a country as powerfull as china be classified as developing?
also realize that the chinese are using a very small percentage of their population to achieve this greatness, what if they throw in more people to fuel the economy? it will be crazy development.
the chinks have morals from grassroots wheras american morals have been eroding away for a long time so you have it,one culture is decaying another is rising.

what makes you think that americans fear the chinese?
ive never heard anyone mention fearing the chinese...that is just not an issue in everyday life in america.
however, i guess the military might be a little wary of them because there are so many and if they decided to go to war against the USA it would be almost impossible to fight arm to arm combat.
nevertheless, i dont think it would be in chinas best interest to begin a fight with the USA because we would win(without a doub)
after all they may have more bodies to send into war but the US has more power, arms, and a whole nation that when angered will do whatever it takes todefend their country.
