Russia is no longer our enemy, but we certainly "defeated" them. The U.S. and the Soviet Union were engaged for over 40 years in a struggle between democracy and global Communism. Ronald Reagan realized the Russian's Achilles heel: in a head to head battle, we could easily outspend them, so they could never keep up with a sophisticated arms race.

In other words, he decided to threaten them with economic bankruptcy, not a military defeat. His strategy worked, and the Soviet Union disbanded.

The Chinese are not our enemy anymore as they do not advocate spreading Communism to unwilling nations. Since the are embracing capitalism, the situation is akin to two global behemoth corporations battling for market share, like Volkswagen and Ford.

If the Chinese ever decided to provoke an attack, their main strength, its huge population, would also become its main weakness. All it would take is for the distribution of food to be interrupted. Faced with starvation, the population might rebel against the government.

Anyway, you are thinking in antiquated terms. China wants prosperity, and nations nowadays realize that "conquering" foreign lands never works out in the long run.

It would be possible to hit Russia and/or China with a devastating first strike that would have to be with utmost precission. Let me explain. The Russians would be the difficult matter. They still have thousands of cold war nukes that are classifed as ICBM's. These are the most potent weapons on earth. They also have Nuclear Missile Submarines and other medium range nuclear missiles. If all of the command and control stations were taken out simultaneously and the higher measure of leadership was removed at the same time. This would be done by special forces in conjunction with stealth bombers, cruise missiles, while under the umbrella of SDI systems (need improvements/tuning and many more units). At this point we would unleash a barage of our own ICBM's at each Missile site and major air bases or any other target fitting deemable of a nuclear threat. Then we would establish air superiority and dominate the landscape with precision weapons and a strategic ground assault would occupy certain deemable areas. The Chinese would be a longer war conventionally, but they have yet to put into service weapons that are even fitting against our systems. Yes, they have space capabilities, but the capabilities are limited. They don't have "USA standard" modern aircraft or russian or european. Their aircraft are remnants of the cold war. Air superiority will decide much of the fate of battle. They do have a large army, but how will they reach the western hemisphere in your estimation? They would be picked off...the new design of military weapons and their precision is frightening. Our military is a well trained, equiped, motivated fighting force. How long did it take us to get to Baghdad in Iraq 2 ? The real deal my friend, the real deal. The casualties that our military has suffered is from fighting an insurgent war with enemies who use guerrilla tactics. However, you do make a valid point for the future as other nations such as China develop technological warfare units there will be a difficult gap to fill.

To defeat China or Russia would mean the end of Earth. There's no such thing as defeating China. Who would the war be against? The U.S.? Why? The U.S. is just paranoid now about anything militaristic because they're doing the Iraq thing.

I can't understand why many people always think of China and Russia in military terms. I've seen a lot of questions asking who would win in a war between U.S. and China, between U.S. and Russia, etc.. It seems that these people are always thinking of war rather than peace. Why are these people so paranoid?.

The Chinese simply intended to replace their aging satellite in space. So they launched a missile to knock-out this old satellite, and then to launch a newer satellite in its orbit. The U.S. had been replacing its old satellites by the same method. So what's wrong when the Chinese uses this method?. Remember that the U.S. is not the sole owner of space. Any country is free to put and remove their satellites in space, if they have the technology to do so. The majority of satellites currently orbiting in space belongs to the U.S.. Yet, no country complained when they were launched or removed from their orbits.

Most likely Armageddon.
Because even if a major world power was successful in defeating another major world power, the end result would be the end of the World as we know it.
Remember Charton Heston with his ape friends?
Most likely that was a bit too romantically inclined.
Visualize a barren world left to whatever new civilization could find the Planet Earth via space travel.

you're over-estimating china. sure they have a military buildup and a large economy, but consider: the united states budget in military spending is 14 times that of china. which means that, in loose terms, if they build 1 plane, we can easily build 14 to counter them. simple as that. their nuclear arsenal is not international, meaning they wont be able to send one our way. their economy is in danger of overheating. by the year 2040, scientists predict that 430 million people in china will be over 60, severly damaging their economic output. by the year 2050, india (a US partner) will have more citizens and more global influence than china. so for everyone who has heard things about china's huge military buildup, it is still relatively small in the global scale. its like a race. the united states and the EU are a few laps ahead of them. while they are catching up, they can only push so hard for so long. and while their efforts may get them close, they were just too far behind to begin with. it is highly unlikely that china will be a contending superpower by the time the 21st century closes.

I've never heard anyone knowledgeable refer to defeating China or Russia. After three years we haven't even defeated the Iraqi insurgency; there's no way we could defeat large countries like that. Anyone who says otherwise is full of it.

Defeat them in what? What are you talking about. Russia is a democracy and China is our largest trading partner.

It means that you must have a population that is in excess of 6 billion people - who are all ready to die when China decides to retaliate!

This will be very hard to come by!
