Florida oranges are certainly worth eating, but there's a scientific reason why they are mosty juice oranges. The humidity in FL is nigher than in CA, making the oranges jucier.

OK first of all, any orange can be orange juice. They are all grown on a tree. What happens though to explain your question is these companies, take the finest oranges and try to perfect them. Its kind of like creating a Hybrid. You take the best seeds from both oranges and try to create a better orange.
So in all honesty when it comes down to it, an orange USE to be An Orange but all the companies are trying to make a superior breed of orange, and yes Florida oranges are just as worthy to eat as California oranges or any orange for that matter that is grown. The only thing differant is climate control, but those oranges all get water and etc so dont worry about it.
No matter where the orange comes from it has to legally go through a process before it can be packaged for shipping.

FL oranges are typically smaller, misshapen and off color than California oranges.
It's a matter of aesthetics. When you go to the market, the oranges you see (for eating) are the same shape, color and size. If one is a little off, you tend not to pick that one up.
Take a look at the juice oranges in the produce section and compare how they look to the navals or table oranges...you'll see what I mean.
Personally, I prefer to eat FL oranges because they are very juicy and much more flavorful than CA oranges.

Florida oranges are deliciously worth eating. I remember years when we would bring home Indian River fruit from the groves where a navel orange would be bigger than a grapefruit and sweet, sweet, sweet!
Actually, here in GA I tend to buy Florida's Natural juice or Indian River juice because the rest of it is from CA. Out of loyalty to the South, I try and buy Florida fruit when it's available, but mostly we get the Sunkist CA oranges---tasty too, but not the stuff of my childhood!

Different types of oranges give up different amounts of juice. I've visited orange juice plants in FL, the oranges they use for juice are not the most beatiful oranges. Not many people would buy them for eating becuase they're ugly, but the juice from them is just fine
