It has to do with the Jetstream and prevailing winds. When you have a tailwind (a wind traveling in the same direction as the plane) the plane's ground speed is somewhat faster. The prevailing wind or Jetstream generally moves from west to east. It helps propel the plane forward on the way to Europe, and slows it down a bit on the way back.

you are both part correct...the earth rotates in a counter clockwise direction...which means that the plane is going with the rotation...then the jetstream, well, the plane goes with that too. to ny you are against both forces...

well i am positive that it has to do with jet stream...
but she also brings up a good point. she might be right too, i dont know how the rotation effects flight.

sure she's wrong. think about which way the earth rotates. London would be rotating away from you. I don't know if it makes that much difference though.
