Personally I do not feel they are worth it. Most dogs do usually get the idea, however, there is NOTHING to stop a stray dog from coming INTO your yard.
My brother's golden would back up from it, get a good running start and blast through the "force field" , ok, one little yipe, but she was out and about.
The other collar he tried didn't have any underground wires at all, just a stationary hub in the house that covered just so much area around the outside of the house. If the dog got close to the perimeter, it would beep...if she got even closer, it would give a mild shock....if she past the barrier, the shock would get stronger, up to 10 levels. He had it set at a 7.... but she didn't care at all. She ended up with bumps on her neck from where the prongs touched her skin and just kept zapping her. She didn't care.
Ok, maybe she was a hard head, but goldens usually catch on very quickly. So, personally, I recommend a regular fence!

We had an invisible fence and it worked well. I guess certain dogs don't do well with them though. Dog's like greyhounds and others that run and chase things will sometimes run out after a car or something and then can't get back in b/c of the shock. We had ours professionally installed but I'm not sure what it cost my parents. I certainly think it was a great investment though. Just remember to take the collar off the dog if you're taking him for a car ride....

From working at a vet I've haven't really heard any bad things about the invisible fence. Most people that have it like it and it works for their dogs. Just keep in mind that it will not prevent other animals from entering your yard. I don't know what type of area you live or what type of dog you have, but some people might have to worry about wild animals or loose dogs coming and attacking your pet. Your pet may be trained so well that it is afraid to run from it's yard. Also do you have pet thieves in your area (people who steal fluffly little guys for dog fight bait).
If you do deciede to get it, i recommend having a professional install it to make sure it's done right.

Well I don't think it's worth it because all it does is shock the poor thing. I personally think a regular fence is just fine. Let me put it this way if you have a small dog, a bigger dog could possibly come and harm it. With a regular fence that's bound to not happen.

Be very careful to read everything on the box (ie weights of the dogs that it's for) One of my uncle's had one for his dog, &, the dog was just 5lbs lighter than what it said (because it was a puppy, he figuered it'd grow into it) Well, the poor thing got FRIED by it ! I would totally advise against it. Also, because it only works for your dog, if another dog or wild animla gets into your yard , if you don't have an electronic doggie door, your dog will have no where to run, whereas the other animal will be free to attack you little guy. I would advise you to use a regular fence.....that way, your dog won't get out & no other animal will get in.

It will take training with the dog to get the dog to respect the fence. Some dogs never will.
If they are a hunting breed or a head strong dog most will take the shock and run through the fence if they see someting on the other side.
It does not keep things out of your yard and allows other dogs into the yard.
Depending on your dog you dog may not stay in the fence.
They can be installed yourself you have to dig a trench for hte cable to go into and hook it up not to hard but a pain to have to dig. They run under $300 or so depending on how large of and area you are wanting to fence off.
I personally prefer fencing with dogs as it is easier to see the barrier it keeps things out and dogs in for sure.

My cousin had the invisible fence and she loved it, kept her dog in the yard, the only problem it didn't keep other dogs from entering the yard and therefore she eventually had to get a fence. If you don't have problems with other dogs running in the neighbourhood then use it. The other problem is, its underground, and if one of the sensors break, they have to come and dig it up, and that can be costly. I personally recommend a fence, it probably is cheaper in the long run.

From what I've seen of them, they are a waste of money. Smart dogs soon figure out that if they run through the fencing fast, they just get a zap, and are out free. The biggest drawback to my mind, is that they don't keep other dogs out. So strange dogs can run in and out of your property at will.
We put up a standard fence, and that way I know where my dogs are, and that the neighbourhood dogs are outside.

Would you want to be shocked every time you went beyond a certain point? I know i wouldn't and i would never do that to my dogs either. I have to small dogs and bought a pin for them when there outside. I plan on getting a doberman and I'm going to do the same thing. You can get the pins from Lowe's or the Home depot. You can also get some fencing materials and make your own pin its really not all that hard.
