Growing up, we had to pull down our pants, lean over the knee. That's the why I think your talking about "old days". Shockingly I am not some crazy, uneducated, violent, law breaking, nut case like the new studies suggest. I also still am very close to my parents. I also raise my girls with spanking, and yep, just like the old days. Why? because it works.
Good Luck

For thousands of years parents spanked kids on a regular basis. It has only been since the failed no-spanking social experiment of the 1950's that spanking has declined.
Fifty years ago in all but one state school paddling was legal and common.
Back then parents understood that a couple of dull swats over layers of clothing was pretty ineffective. Most of the time kids were spanked on their bare rear--and usually with something like a paddle or hairbrush.
I realize there may have been some that way over did it (just like there are now) and it was abuse. And that is wrong.
But I think we would all benefit from a trend back toward more spanking and making the spankings a bit more meaningful I actually think that a lot of us younger parents are doing a lot more spanking--we are just sick and tired of all the bratty kids and the Nanny 911 nonsense.

All of these ways of spanking is the reason that spanking is not in vogue now. Thats why a swat on the butt can land you in court because our parents and grandparents were so brutal in years past.

they were allowed to be. just in the last 10-15 years times have changed. Now, you are no longer to spank a child. It isn't the parents raising the kids, it is the state. In the late 70's I was spanked good. I came out okay. Was it abuse, by todays standards, yes. at the time, no, it was normal.

i'm no longer able to answer maximum of your questions simply by fact (and no, i'm no longer one in all those once you study this ) I havn't spanked my newborn because she became 4-5. She's 10 now and is no longer "grounded". All little ones are diverse and probably i'm fortunate yet my daughter is acquainted with by using the seem on my face that she isn't purely in hardship yet specially that she has dissapointed me. particular issues are taken away - ex. no video games, no laptop, no television, no friends over next weekend. as quickly as my daughter became sufficiently previous (5) to attain a verbal punishment, I went with that and caught with it simply by fact it works. perhaps that kind of punishment is way less stressful for me, i'm a single parent and function been because she became 3. i'm all she's have been given and he or she would not choose to toss her attitude around for too long. while she see's that i'm mad, she staightens up particularly rapid.

I think spanking was more effective back in the old days. My mom whipped me with a switch and a cord one time and Im 21 and I have a fear for my mom to the point where even tho Im grown I wont dis respect her. She whipped us with brushes house shoes any thing she got her hands on and sometimes she didnt wait until we got home wherever we showed our behinds thats where she beat our behinds, and I use those same tactics with my own child becasue now days too many kids dont get whipped enough and they grow up to not only dis rspect their parents they even hit them and curse them. We have let society and T.V tell us the right way to discipline our kids and now children have all the power, I always tell my kids like my momma told me, "your gonna take a whoppin, call the police if you want when they get here they will have a reason to take you" My parents didnt play that callin 411-KIDS or whatever the number was because usually if you was getting a whoopin u deserved it.

Yes, years ago if I did something wrong my mom tore my butt up. My mom had this look that she would give me as if to warn me that if I didn't straighten up I would get a whipping. In the mid 50's and 60's kids got whipped with whatever there parent found that would hurt, like someone told me that they got whipped with an extension cord. Can you imagine how that would hurt. I am glad that my parents did not go to that extreme. I do not whip my daughter because I give her one look and she already knows how far to push me.

i'd say all types of punishment still continue, but today that kind of "brutal" punishment is looked down upon and therefore done more privately....
i remember being punished in numerous ways which would now be called child abuse:
hit with hairbrush
kicked
blow to the head
locked in closet
etc
.......i'm sure those things still go on, but children are now seen more as people with rights than posessions....so, i'm guessing most people who prefer physical punishment keep it quiet

I don't think parents were more "brutal" as you call it. I beleive that parents today have given all the power to the kids and that is why society as a whole is in chaos right now. I'm glad my mom gave me a few good swats, I definitly learned right from wrong and made sure I didn't make the same mistakes again. =o)

It was definitely different. All of the teachers in elementary schools had paddles with holes in them. If we got rowdy all they had to do was take the paddle out of the drawer and put it on their desk. That usually put an end to any misbehaving.
