I was diagnosed with sciatica alomst 2 weeks ago. i am in the most unimaginable pain. It started in one leg now in both, my whole back is stiff and sore.
Any tips for self/natural pain management? (i've been on pain killers, they didn't do a great deal but i can't live of them forever.)
i am in my final year of uni so i have a lot of work to do but i can't sit still, i also have 2-4 hour lectures to attend, what can i do to assist me in sitting still for lengthy periods of time?
Tips to help me sleep would also help?
I have tried ice pack, helps a little, and have done all sorts of excercises it's just getting worse.
Doctor says nothing he can do, i am 20, back pain at this age is this a bad sign for me?

Your doctor is full of it. I have the same thing and have lived with it over a year now every day plus 5 bulging discs. There are a couple of things you can do. If you sleep on your side, put a pillow between your legs. DO NOT excercise it does make worse. There is a couple things you might want to look into. It's a decompression table, if you go to a chiropractor ask them for info. Also there is Prolotherapy, which is a shot, I know a few people that have done it and they are fine. My insurance doesn't cover so I can't do it. Just look up Prolotherapy on the internet and you can read up on it. Ibuprofin is real good to take. Helps me. Sitting is the worst I know, not really anything you can do for that. Try sitting on one of those balls or put a pillow behind you. When the nerve starts hurting there is a spot you can press on and it will relieve the pressure it's on the upper part of your butt, it's hard to explain, it's cover by a muscle so you have to press hard on it. You will feel it move. Hope this helped a little, I know what your going through. It sucks!

You should check this sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

Hey there,
It is a fact that no one condition reflects sciatica and it would be prudent to refer to it as a generic medical term encompassing lots of symptoms that taken together describe a lower back pain that a patient suffers from. When someone complains of severe back pain that passes down to legs through his buttocks, even down to his feet and toes, doctors suspect him to be suffering from sciatica. Often sciatica presents itself as numbness or a tingling sensation that may not be anything like the severe pain commonly associated with sciatica. This tingling or numbness may be felt by the person when he engages in some activities.
On this site you can find very good tips on how to treat your sciatica: http://curesciatica.toptips.org

Oh dear, I cringe just reading your letter. I am 75 and in all my years I never had pain as bad as sciatica. I have huge pain tolerance but that made me scream in pain so I know what you are suffering and my heart is going out to you. My only help was with acupuncture. I did not get help from pain pills unless I was knocked unconscious by them . I had a lot of problems getting to the acupuncturist , just getting in and out of the car was a pain but getting off his table I felt already relief. Had to do it a few times but I recently broke my arm and when the pain would not go away I went right back to the needles and slept like a baby after the treatment and the pain did not return. Hope you get this help.

Have you had an MRI or mylegram done? Your doctor should have ordered one to see what is going on with your back. I have 2 protruding discs in my back and the sciatic nerve is pinched so I do know how you feel. Have you tried a chiropractor? That sometimes helps. When you are in bed, put a pillow between your legs when lying on your side and a pillow under your knees if lying on your back.
Unless you want to give pain management a try there isnt much they can do.
God bless and hope you get better!!!!
