You need to crate train your dog. If he's in a crate at night, he won't make a mess in it--dogs won't go where they sleep. He'll whine for the first couple weeks, but eventually will begin to think of it as his "den." Ultimately you'll be able to keep him out at night, but training him should be your priority now.

Take him to training classes. With dogs from the pound a lot of time you have to train them like you would a puppy. You want to get a crate. The crate should be big enough for him to turn around in, Sit and lay down in. When your not home or sleeping put him in there. When you are home and can watch him let him out. Make sure you take him right outside when you get home and about 15 to 20 Min's after he eats or drinks and then also before bed. As far as the whining put a clock that ticks by his crate or some soft music playing.

Ok, you're getting a lot of mixed answers to this and you should not be confused when it comes to puppies and house-training. First of all, the puppy needs more outside-time more frequently than just once or twice a day. Poodles are a particularly smart breed and very sensitive to pleasing you. He already knows he should be outside when he has to go, you just need to let him out more often. As a general rule, puppies need to potty first thing in the morning, after eating/drinking, after sleeping, and after playing. That works out to around eight times a day he should be allowed to go outside to potty. Crate training is a good idea, but not if you plan to substitute time in the crate for being outside. That will only cause the puppy to be anxious and fearful, not to mention being cruel. Crate training is overrated, but it can work under the right circumstances. Ask your vet or a reputable dog trainer about it. Being a puppy, he will naturally be highly inquisitive and energetic. Sometimes he will get caught up in whatever is holding his attention and thereby not pay you any heed. Don't fret and don't panic...its a puppy and he will learn to listen to you as you learn to pay attention to his needs as well. Poodles are a great breed to have and they are intelligent and affectionate. With a little patience and some adjustment to your routine, you'll soon have a dog who won't potty inside.

How would you like it if you were denied a bathroom for nine hours? Or left alone without a soul to love or care for you?
Why should he listen to you when you have never sought his respect or affection. His tearing up things is his way of telling you he is bored and under exercised. See if you can find a home with kids to play with or a walker to make his hours alone bearable. If you can't take the time to make time with him, don't thinks hes a bad dog, hes just a lonely one.
Sometimes the reality of having a dog is much different than just loving them and this may not be the right time for you to have one.

I agree, crate training is the best for potty training a dog. Dogs will not make a mess where they sleep. Leaving a dog for 9 hours is a long time so make sure you give him plenty of exercise when you are home.

What did you expect? First of all, your POODLE is only 6 months old. His little bladder can take about 7 hours max without having to relieve himself. After that you're looking at a possible infection. Why don't you try holding your pee for about 2 hours after you REALLY need to relieve yourself. Let me know how that works out for you.
Did you ever think that his "whining" is a warning telling you that he's got to go to the bathroom. Heaven forbid his needs should disturb your sleep!
You are obviously not ready to take on the responisibility of owing a puppy.

A poodle is NOT a good breed to be alone. If you can't afford doggy day care, then perhaps this wasn't the best adoption idea for your dog.
Nine hours without going to the bathroom is ridiculous.

Crate train him. We did that to our poodle and eventually we were she didn't need the crate anymore and we had no problems with her messing in the house.
