My PC is a Dell Dimension 5000 Series. I have already tried downloading new drivers for the audio systems but this has not helped. ANY advice would be welcome.

The device may be there but it may not recognise it as an audio device.

Check in Other devices under Device manager to see if it is there.

Also, check your sound settings to make sure nothing is muted. Mute settings are also saved in Media player so check this too.

I think XP has a Sound troubleshooter too so try this - it may help.

well, if you're sure you downloaded the correct driver
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R94481&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_5000&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2430&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=2&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=122481

then, did you switch the audio leads/move the computer?

Is the audio perhaps muted?

are the speakers on?

Sorry if these seem lame questions but you'd be surprised how often it is a lame problem.
