Check the card. Try it in another slot. See what comes up.
Alternatively, go to Device Manager under System, and see if there is a yellow mark against the Device.
Also, maybe an attempt to load by the ADD HARDWARE method, and see if the Card is recognised.
Check your options under Audio cards, and see what is checked and what is not checked. Thats as much as I can think of... Thats the broad spectrum of tests I use in fixing various PCs

if it's onboard audio then search the motherboard manufacterer with the model number of the board. If you have a mainboard cd you can use that if it's an add on hearch who made it. You can go to driveragent.com and let it scan your computer. It will tell you which drivers you need. Do a Google or Yahoo search for the drivers you need.

The gadget might want to properly be there besides the undeniable fact that it would want to no longer realize it as an audio gadget. verify in different instruments below gadget manager to confirm no matter if it truly is there. also, verify your sound settings to make positive no longer some thing is muted. Mute settings are also saved in Media participant so verify this too. i imagine XP has a valid troubleshooter too so do this - it would want to help.

Check to see if you've mistakenly mute the volume
secondly open the system case and have a look at your sound card to see if it is properly tighten - if it is ok, loosen the nuts a little bit, shake the card with a zero force and tighten it back.

Did you buy the machine new? If not, someone may have installed a new sound card, and it may be conflicting with the onboard sound card. Try disabling the onboard sound card and make sure you have the most up to date drivers for the aftermarket card if there is one.

Check system>devices>hardware and see if there are exclamation points next to the device. If they are next to the sound device then it is not working properly and you should delete and re-install the drivers/device.
