You have obviously never seen a pit bull fight. I used to own 4 pit bulls, key word being "used" to. One of my dogs, out of no where, attacked our puppy while he was SLEEPING! When they decide to lock onto a target it is near impossible to break them apart. My husband got bit in the process and the puppy was gushing blood everywhere, between the two of them I cleaned up blood for three hours. Not to mention the 4 hour trip to the ER with my husband and the emergency trip to the vet with the puppy. Around $2000 in medical expenses later, my husband had a huge missing chunk taken out of his arm and the puppy needed several wounds cauterized closed. I have had all these dogs since birth. They are all very well trained, exercised, but that one just snapped for some reason. It scared the living sh*t out of me, especially since I am like 34 weeks pregnant. I forced my husband to take him to the pound. He found one of his friends to take the dog so he didn't get put down. I never thought one of my dogs would do that, I thought the same thing you do. But when it happens right in front of you, in your living room, and you watch a loved one get bit, and the dogs just won't stop fighting and blood is spraying everywhere you will change your mind.

Properly bred and well raised ones are sweet, but unfortunately, the ones we hear about on the news are raised by low-lifes and are dangerous.
The people who perpetuate these awful rumors about these breeds are just uneducated about dogs... and they have most likely never met a preoperly raised pit breed dog in their life. They just believe what they hear and see on the news.
Any dog who is raised by ignorant and abusive people will be unpredictable. The danger lies when the neglected/abused dog is strong and has the potential to do serious harm to anything in its path.
You abuse a Yorkie and you get a nip on the finger, you abuse a Pit breed dog or a GSD or a Rottie and you get a chunk taken out of your leg or worse.
If a person seriously mentally and/or physically abuses and mistreats an animal long enough, no matter if it's large or small, it's gonna defend itself if it feels threatened. I don't hear anyone complaining about the fact that 99.9% of gerbils bite... there's no gerbil ban.... because it's small and like a Yorkie can do very little harm even if it's been abused and taught to be mean.
But because a pit breed dog has the potential to do harm, along with the tendency to appeal to the worng kind of owners, they have gotten a bad rap. If drug dealers and street gangs suddenly thought Dalmations were the cool dog to have, they'd be the ones being banned.
These dogs have just as much potential to harm as any other large breed, they are just being sought out by very ignorant, careless and cruel people who raise fearful puppies, teach their dogs to be mean to show how macho they are. Then the dogs wind up hurting someone when the owners aren't around to beat the animal into submission, therefore, creating the illusion that it's the breed's fault.
People need to open their eyes and educate themselves before making judgements.

Because in many instances, when people read in the paper about dogs mauling people or other pets, the attacking dog is a pit bull or a rottwiller. Like others have said, it's the owner who are to blame for this, but, that being said, pure breed dogs of all shapes and sizes do tend to have certain charactaristics that could, with incorrect training, be problematic (ie pit bulls/ terriers in general have very strong jaws, so if they do attack it would be nearly impossible for a victim to shake them off).

We have to be honest here. I love pits, but I am also aware that they definitely CAN hurt flies, and dogs, and even people. People say awful things about pits because some owners (barely a drop in the bucket of pit owners) raise their dogs poorly. As I keep saying ANY dog that is praised for killing or maiming other animals will do just that for attention. When people stop fighting and mistreating their pits, the breed will stop being in the news, and everyone will have to start talking about how horrible dauchshunds are. ;)

Because irresponsible pet owners are using these dogs for their benefit. Pit Bulls are loving, tender animals, it's the owner's that make them mean. Any dog can be made mean, Pit Bull's are marked because alot of people get them and use them in abusive ways. Don't blame the dog, blame the owner!

For the most part it's all in how the animal is raised. I love pits. When raised right they are the sweetest dogs, however there are people out there that raise them for dog fights to make money or to be guard dogs. This is where all the vicious attacks come from. The blame is solely on the owner and unfortunately they have gotten a bad reputation for it.

Some people see something on TV and think that means it is going to happen to them. and while most pit bulls are big sweet mush balls, a lot of them aren't so fond of other dogs. people think this means they feel the same way about people.

Maybe yours [if you have one] is 'all that' - but the breed has become very dangerous and can attack without provocation. Their attacks are more deadly due to the structure of their jaw and the psi they exert and their penchant for not letting go.
TOO many children have been senselessly maimed or killed by this breed as well as cases of severe injury or death to the breed's owners [many of whom say their doggie never did a thing wrong before].
There was a case not long ago of a woman who was on a road trip with her pit who had been her doggie since an 8 wk only pup...never a problem, so she says. For no reason the dog awoke in the rear seat of the car and began to attack her. She made it out of her car and like an idiot when the dog calmed down and began to whine and cry, she got back in the car and the attack - recommenced. She barely made it out the 2nd time and a passing car took her to the hospital where she had hundreds of stitches and surgery - the dog was euthanized and she filed suit against the town...
I certainly hope you are not like she.
I am an animal lover so don't get me wrong - but I do know when a breed [for whatever reason-in breeding, unkind care, training etc] has become not welcome in my neighborhood or my home.
BTW - I AM informed and do not speak on emotion but cold hard facts.
