The only post in California is Ft. Irwin, but there is also Ft. Lewis Washington, which depending on where in california you live, could be somewhat close (a days drive) There are currently no posts in oregon for active duty, but there is a post in Colorado (also depending where you live, about a days drive). You guys will need to mapquest to see which posts are closest to you in california. As for how often you will see your boyfriend, he is given 30 days leave per year, depending on his unit where he ends up stationed, most have "block leave" which usually is 15 days in the summer, 15 days around christmas, in which he would be allowed to take leave, so long as he has days of leave coming due to him. Some posts however, do not use the "block leave" and allow the soldier to take leave whenever, so long as no more then 10% of the unit is on leave, and so long as it does not interfear with training, deploying ect. You could see your boyfriend as often as twice a year, but possibly only once depending. As far as being a medic, he needs to talk with a recruiter, and then with MEPS about which posts offer which jobs, what jobs he qualifies for ect.... Good luck to you both!

When (because chances are really good that he won't get anywhere in CA) he gets stationed elsewhere, you can always move to be close to him. IF you're married, the government will even move you to the base where they put him and either put you up in base housing or compensate you to live off post
.
If he gets deployed, however, you'll get 2 weeks out of that whole year to spend with him when he comes home for R&R. When he's in the field training, you live without him then, too, but usually for no more than 30 days at a time.

If he is "gone" then you won't see him until he returns to his home station. When a person joins the military you don't get to pick where you live, they station you where they need you. So the odds of him being stationed in CA are slim. When I joined in 1976 I was living in San Diego, CA. I spent my 3 years at Ft. Sill, OK.

There just aren't that many army posts in California.

Good luck

The only shot he has in CA is Fort Irwin. It's the National Training Center (NTC) where units train up before going over to the middle east and other places. Since he's single (not married) and a junior soldier he'll be living in the barracks until the two of you are married. Good luck with that.

Depends on what kind of medic. If he is going to be joining the army then he will most likely be sent over seas. My father just came back from Iraq and they are in need of medics at the moment.

Well you can move with him:) I am an Army wife:) Best thing to ever happen to me... But there will be some negative stuff.. If he goes to basic you wont see him for awhile:( If you get married you can get BAH and Insurance.... If I was you I would go with him and get an apartment or house or whatever.... We are stationed at Fort Campbell, KY we are 45 minutes from Nashville, TN:) I moved 400 Miles away from my family:( Im not sure exactly what bases are in CA.. Id have to ask hubby:(
