The SVD (Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova)is the Soviet Sniper Rifle, While outwardly resembling the familiar Kalashnikov rifle, the SVD fires a more powerful cartridge, more accurately, and with less disturbance of aim due to the short stroke gas piston system, rather than the AK series’ long stroke system. Also, while the Kalashnikov series rifles are selective fire, the Dragunov is semiautomatic only thus the choice is clearly the SVD, its a lightweight and quite accurate (for it's class) rifle, capable of semi-auto fire
If you can afford the price of a Russian manufactured SVD then get that one….The Chinese rifles are usually painted with a high gloss black paint that easily chips, plus the metal surfaces are a little rougher in appearance. Also the Chinese NDM's have a slightly different receiver cover. The Russian SVD's have a flat black coating that is extremely durable. The quality of the metal is very good on either rifle.
Russian SVD: $3500 - $6000 depending on condition and accessories.
Russian Tiger carbine: $1300 - $1800 also depending on condition and accessories (add $1000 to price if California Armory version).
Chinese NDM-86: $2200 - $3200 if in 7.62x54 and $1800 - $2400 if 7.62x51. Add a premium if in deluxe velvet case.
Romanian PSL (ROMAK-3/SSG-97/ FPK): $700 - $900

To purchase you have to contact your local governing and regulatory body.

The dragunov is chambered in 7.62x54R. It's roughly equivalent to .308 to 30-06 in performance. More than enough for deer and good for elk. Expect roughly 2moa for accuracy. Finding ammo is not a giant problem. It's not as common as 30-06 but then pretty much nothing is. Best option is to learn to do a little reloading. Then there aren't too many firearms that ammo will be troublesome to find. However and actual Dragunov rifle isn't cheap by any standards. And most of what you find for sale are actually clones or other rifles restyled to look like a dragunov.

Get the Romak and buy several other rifles with the money you save. Unless you are a wealthy collector, your motto should be "the more the merrier"!
