This is not true - women drive those ginormous big trucks in the mines, there are nearly as many boys waiting on tables as girls - there are heaps of women doctors, lawyers, Shires (Counties in the US employ women on their "outside" staff, driving trucks, operating machinery. Girls work as ringers (cowboys) and jillaroos and stations, fruitpicking - Though still far from perfect, things have changed, we are moving on and once this government goes we will surge forward again - Go for it girl!

The division of labour is a social norm everywhere in the world, including in the Scandinavian countries, which have a greater sense of equality between the sexes.
Having said that, women are welcome to have a go in traditionally male-dominated professions, and vice-versa. There are definitely no legal barriers against this in Oz, and in fact it is highly encouraged (for example males are given scholarships to study Primary School teaching, and females are sought after to enter trades).
I'm sure it is not any different from wherever you are coming from.
I really hope you enjoy Australia!!

Australia is like any other western country. People work in any job they chose. Women are sought to work on the mine trucks as they are not as rough on the machinery.

Cities are different to rural areas, as some places are stuck in a time warp, but they are gradually catching up.

Enjoy your visit, and check out as many areas as you can.

We are currently travelling in a caravan around Australia with our kids, check out www.howtodoit2.com for an idea of what places we have seen, we only started 3 months ago and have managed to only see Far North Queensland so far.

That is completely untrue. I am an Aussie. I know girls that are mechanics and truck drivers and I now guys that are hairdressers and waiters.

That is a stereotype. you can tell your friend he/she is wrong because you will find out he/she is very wrong.
