Dont worry, i am not a drug addict/alcoholic, it's for an essay at college! Any other groups you think that would also raise the same question?

Well its either that or they will not get treatment. They spend all their limited funds on their drug of choice. Maybe a scheme which gets them to "pay" for their treatment by doing community work after they have been "cured";

Are you forgetting the huge amount paid in tax each month that goes straight out of people's wages? Be it the wages of hill wakers, drinkers, smokers, drug takers? In theory I think yes drink and drug addicts should pay for NHS treatment, but in practice I don't think it would work at all. How on earth would you enforce it? As a country we'd all do better to prevent such problems occuring, rather than just force people pay for their addictions/poor decisions in life. Where do you draw the line between what is self inflicted and what isn't? Your hill walkers example is a bit strange; but what if they had to be rescued from unforeseeable weather setting in? Does that make it their fault for going out in the first place? There are always risks in life, and you cannot just bill people for the consequences and say 'your fault, you pay'! Should we start billing YOU when you suffer eye problems from spending time on the internet? I appreciate what you are saying, but it could simply never work.

This a hard Question cause i really want to say "NO" but on the other and they have a right ust like the rest of us.

What i object to is that the ones that are on benifits get extra money to help with their addiction

(i am sure/hope that its not meant for that reason tho)

their is a guy that lives near me and he is an alcoholic, he gets an extra £15 per day because he has a drink problem.

I have three kids, both my partner and myself work but struggle to pay our bills and mortgage but we dont get any extra help!!!

Yes, as they are UK citizens just like everybody else and it would be discriminatory for healthcare only to be provided to some and not others simply because they are seen to have brought illness upon themselves or are not as 'useful' to society as others.

It could also pave the way for a slippery slope into, for example, treating younger patients rather than the elderly because they have a longer life ahead of them - cases like this would be clearly morally questionable, but not treating people because of their problems with drugs could bring us one step closer to greater discrimination in hospitals.

Personally, i think that they should be entitled since some probably do pay National Insurance. What i dont agree with is people have things like breast enlargements on the NHS!!!!! If its something derogatory to their health, then sure, if its something they want to enhance there appearance, they should pay privately!

The answer is yes. Its a social decease and the NHS was designed to serve society.

Alcoholism is classified as a disease by the world health organisation,it does not restrict itself to degenerates and down and outs,it affects all branches of society and as a disease it should be treated like any other illness.
