My daughter got her a puppy last March (part lab and shepherd). Where I live there are leash laws. Because we haven't got a fenced in yard, we have made her a house dog. In the mornings, we put her out on a chain to do her business, then before we leave the house we bring her back inside. We walk her in the evening. So for the most part she stays inside.
Back in August or September, she went into heat.
Now, behind my house over the next block lives the dog catcher. But a few houses down from him is another family with another dog that is ALWAYS running free around the town. We had chased the dog off many times. But somehow...
In November, my daughters puppy, that wasn't even a year old, had 8 puppies. Between 4 kids and 10 dogs, I am at my wits end.
I have been trying to give them away but no one wants them.
I have since had the dog fixed to avoid any future liters.
Is it wrong for me to make the owners of the "free roaming" dog to take at least half the litter?

I wouldn't do it! Sounds like they're not good owners as it is, so why would you put your pups in that situation?

Take them to your local shelter. Puppies get adopted FAST!

It depends on the laws in your state as well as the agreement between the two of you as it relates to your dog got her dog pregnant.... you are both at fault (I certainly hope some of the vet bill was for spaying & neutering) did she abandon the dog with you? did she call, check on the dog, follow up? Personally, I would not give her the puppies and I would not give her any money for them either You gave her one of the puppies & the female... tell her that is it... no more if she tries to take you to court, then let her... and when that happens, then counter-sue for the vet bills, cost of food and any other supplies you used while tending to her dog and those puppies Just because she owns the mamma doesn't mean she owns the puppies.. why? because she abandoned the litter to you before it was born.... they were born on your property & supported by you (food, supplies, vet bill, etc) If I were you.... I would get them into good homes as best you can.... without her knowing where those homes are.... maybe even ask the vet if you can bring the pups to the office so people can see them as available for adoption (this is assuming they are old enough to be adopted out)

I think that's a bad idea.

They may find a way to make money from the puppies. This could be seen as a reward for their blatant stupidity and ignorance of not getting their male fixed and letting him roam free like that. Besides, if you didn't see her outside with the other dog and didn't have her fixed then, it's partially your fault. You weren't outside supervising and she was chained up without you there, and if you weren't willing to deal with the pups, you should have had her in for an emergency spay within a timely manner.

I would try and find a no-kill shelter or a rescue in your area to take them. Puppies typically leave shelters very quickly because they are puppies and oh-so-cute. Besides that, I'm sure knowledgeable dog owners can give you more suggestions. Good luck.

Well, did you actually see the "free roaming" dog and your dog hooked up? How can you be sure it was that dog? Also, why didn't you fix the dog before this happened. No, you can't just take a litter and tell someone they are responsible, you were in charge of your dog. If you didn't want pups to begin with, then spaying should have been done before. Call the ASPCA or your local animal shelter and ask if they would be willing to take the pups when they are old enough to be away from mom.

I wouldn't give the owners of the free roaming dog the pups. They clearly aren't responsible owners...who knows what will become of the pups. You would be better off taking them to the local shelter. They will find homes quickly! Whatever you do, do NOT put an ad in the paper advertising FREE pups. This brings all kinds of idiots, including those looking for research subjects for labs and dogfighters looking for bait.

This is a great example of why spaying and neutering is a wonderful thing! Pets can be fixed as young as 6-8 weeks.

I don't think that is a option.
Just look in the phone book for the nearest SPCA and drop the puppies off there when they are weaned.
When you don't get your dog fixed you really need to just deal with the consequences. If she was fixed he could never had got her pregnant. And if the dog is that free roaming the dog catcher will get him eventually just keep calling or just call when the dog is in your yard. In CA we have to put the roaming dog on a leash and then call the dog catcher they are a sorry lot out here!

I think it's an idealistic concept that both sides of the fence find homes for unplanned/unwanted puppies.

however the reality is that you can't legally force them to take them, and in a sense, no... you don't exactly have the right to, as you didn't have your dog spayed, it takes two to tango as they say. You are just as responsible if not more so, than the owner of the male dog.

Do give the other owner the opportunity to help find the puppies homes to better their odds of getting placed.

But if you can't, then you have little other choice than to turn them over to the county animal shelter or the humane society.

Since they are puppies and they are lap/shep/??? mix... likely they will be good natured and very cute/beautiful puppies, and will not likely have trouble finding new welcoming homes.

best of luck, and good for you to getting your dog spayed now, at least it will avoid future pregnancies, and pyometra issues.

That is why you should NEVER leave a dog in heat chained up alone and if it wasn't that dog some other dog would have gotten to her. No you should not give this man half the puppies. The puppies need to stay with the mother until they are AT LEAST 8 weeks, then try to find good families or give them to your local shelter. Good Luck

u really cannot make them take the puppies. It is just as much ur fault as theirs. The reason i say that is because if u did not want puppies the dog should of been spayed. Dogs in heat can attract any male dog for miles. Do not get me wrong, they should have their dog neutered and keep the dog contained so it does not wander, but you both are at fault so u cannot make them take the puppies. Try taking the pups to walmart and try giving them away. A saturday is the best time to do it.

While they are ethically responsible in part, "making" them take half the litter is impossible. Your best bet is to contact a local shelter and see if they'll help you place the pups.

For future reference... a dog can be fixed at around 4 months of age. (Shelters do it even earlier). If you get them fixed before their first heat, you won't have to deal with this again. Unfortunately, even when there's leash laws, it seems there will always be irresponsible people letting their dogs run about. We have the same problem.

Good luck finding homes for the pups. And thanks for getting your dog fixed.

i'll take a puppy. =) Um, you should talk to the other dog's owners, explain your situation and see what they say. If they are nice, they will take the puppies off of your hands. Offer to pay for an add in the newspaper as long as THEY are the ones taking care of them. Also, you should put adds every where u can; telephone poles, on a supermarket bullitin board. ect. You could even give a pup to a relitive or keep a puppy. I hope this helps!!!
God Bless You!!!
